Anyone else download this on Live? I'm a sucker for top down hack and slash dungeon crawlers, a genre grossly underrepresented on this current generation of systems. Some of my favorite games from the last gen were the Champions of Norrath games. I know there's a new game ( think its called Dungeon siege 2) coming out soon in this genre as well as the eventual Diablo game (not sure if that is gonna be PC only though), but wanted to give Torchlight a chance.

So far its ok, not quite sure I know where to go or what to do, but I've been killing a bunch of stuff and grinding out levels which is always fun.

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance and the sequel Baldurs Gate II for the PS2 are pretty fucking great.

Diablo 3 left a lot to be desired, but at least it was polished.

If you enjoy colors thrown at you left and right, you'll enjoy Torchlight 2.

Well found D3 to be terrible and quit after 30 minutes, so I dismissed it much faster than you.

As the saying goes, you can't polish a turd, so I disagree that D3 was polished.

Torchlight 2 is short, mindless, easy, and dull. There is no variance in encounters, and environments are "WoW 2.0".

Diablo 3 will never be as good as Diablo 2...but it was the best dungeon crawler in 2012.

And yet they have the same critic score on metacritic.

So based on personal preference, either D3 or T2 can be considered the dungeon crawler of the year. Truly remarkable.

Hardly, don't misconstrue my post.

Diablo 3 is a better game. Torchlight 2 is a better time sink.

Based on your opinion, yes.

Diablo 3 has a better reward system, a tiered progression track that adds to a better chance of getting "top gear" without promising it. Torchlight 2's formula is simple - "Time Spent is directly proportional to strength of character." Everything is handed to you if you play for 'x' amount of time. The game lacks challenge.

You played it for an hour and a half so I'm sure you know.

I've said this before, I'll say it again. I have a group of several friends that I play most of my games with. We all pretty much have the same (correct) judgement of games. They stuck with Torchlight much longer than I did, as I went back to Diablo 3 at that time. While they took longer to come up with the same deduction I did, they came to it eventually. And that was after maxing out their characters. If you don't like me voicing their opinions, feel free to look at the internet's posted opinions of the game. Whether they give it a good review or bad, you'll find a theme in that everyone believes Torchlight 2 is an easy game full of grind rather than a game with a challenging and rewarding loot system.

Which I prefer. I want some sense of "skill" going into beating a game, or beating other people in a game. I do not want to play a game where time invested is the sole determination of being "good" or not.

If I'm going to waste my free time playing a game...let me at least feel accomplished.

I was going to sarcastically post about your friends playing games transitive knowledge argument but you did it much better than I could and you were actually serious.

Champions of Norrath and Champions Return to Arms were even better.
