This seems like a really good deal. What's the catch?

And?

Reviews seem positive. Price is right.

Is this not a hip company or something, Douchebag?

Someone in your family would have to lose their virginity to Richard Branson.

Device selection?

Coverage? Maybe you can only get reception over the North Atlantic.

There doesn't seem to be much of a catch. It seems like you pay a little more up front for the phone, but you will probably end up saving money in the long run. I'd be interested to see how good the coverage is. Looks like they are on Sprint's network, so you should be okay.

These seem somewhat comparable to T-Mobile plans. For example you can get unlimited minutes and texts for 50, and that includes 500 mb data. If you need more data you can get 2gb, which is a lot for a casual user, for ten more dollars to make it 60/mo. Unlimited data would make it 70/mo, which is 15 more than Virgin's plan, but a bigger network. I don't know how buying devices works with virgin, but at T-Mobile you're not obligated to sign a contract anymore and you can use your own (compatible) device instead of buying a new one.

I switched from US Cellular a few months ago. I like it. No problems aside from having worse reception at the Cell, but everyone I know who has anything other than US Cellular always had issues getting a signal there. I have the $55 plan and a decent phone. I'm good. And it's month to month anyway, so if I ever don't like it, I don't have to stay with them.

Not to mention, Sprint's service absolutely sucks. I was so glad to leave them, and I'm really happy I left US Cellular before Sprint took that over too.

Like others have mentioned, one advantage with virgin and T-Mobile over Sprint, Verizon, etc., is the lack of a contract. You're free to leave whenever you please. FWIW, I've had T-Mobile for quite some time now and have had no problems. For awhile I had a prepaid plan that gave you only 100 minutes but unlimited texting and data for thirty dollars. I got around the minutes limit by using Skype and the like and just texting more often. Now I'm on one of the new plans I mentioned earlier.

That's great cause Im on a text only basis with most people. I have maybe 5 conversations with my mom (too much) and like 15 conversations with my daugher (saying good night) and its like 70 mins usually

Im gonna change the thread title to add a question on minutes

Yes I didn't use many minutes either so the plan was ideal. It is 10 cents per minute if you go over 100. If a family plan is something you'd consider, you might pay around 30+ for more or less the same data and texting services and unlimited minutes, depending on how many people are on your plan.

The thirty dollar 100 minute plan is run in conjunction with Wal-Mart, so that might be the place to go if the plan is still offered. I switched about three months ago.

Ya know...Sprint's service sucks right now (and US Cellular's is getting worse) because of the tower transitioning. US Cellular towers are slowly coming offline and are being converted to Sprint. Eventually, Sprint will have US Cellular type service. It's supposed to be complete in January.

I still have to make a decision, but Sprint is basically "giving" ~$190 to US Cell customers.

I have T-Mobile and I hate it. Worst service I have ever had and I've had all the major brands.

Did you get a card in the mail yet? With the instant discounts and applied credits, it's about $190.

I like TMobile, but none of the providers have as good of coverage as Verizon according to coverage maps.

Verizon does prepaid unlimited talk, text and web for $50. The catch is that the web is the slow kind on a basic phone. If you want data for a smart phone you pay $10 or $20 extra and that goes by the GB. Basically you get to keep your number and you have to buy the phone (limited selection of a handful of phones from $50 to $100). But it's much easier than getting stuck in a 2-year deal, paying hundreds of dollars in taxes on your phone bill, not being able to get an upgrade for 2 years, etc.

T-Mobile is super cheap if you have 4 people on a family plan ($50 for the first, $30 for the second, $10 for the third and $10 for the fourth). T-Mobile's no contract is nice, but the coverage is not as good as Verizon. Sprint is definitely giving deals, but they may require contracts with those deals. Cheap cell phones are often dangled in front of customers to lock them into long term commitments with no get of out jail free deals.

Really, ultimately it depends on how valuable coverage is to you, how much you're willing to spend and if you need all the bells and whistles of an expensive phone with a 2-year contract or if you use your phone primarily for calls and texts and want to only pay for the features you absolutely need.

Regular carriers
T-Mobile no contract, upgrade when you want to pay off the phone. Can buy and use your own phone instead of purchsing one from the carrier. Cons: so-so coverage. With taxes and fees average bill is $60 to $70 a month.
Sprint offering deals for US Cellular customers Cons: Probably lock you into a contract
Verizon best coverage of the providers, in and out of the area Cons: Expensive, restrictive contract and $35 activation fees

Prepaid
Pay on average between $50 and $70 a month depending on carrier. No contract. Save on phone tax.
Cons: Must buy phone before using it. Less or limited features compared to regular plans. Not all plans offer equal coverage or good customer service. Must pay up first or risk going into expensive pay as you go plan.

Service is getting a lot worse up here. The Blackberry is acting all kinds of weird. I'm not receiving texts and my 16GB media card just decide to corrupt itself.

I think I'm going to get the Galaxy 4S and give Sprint a try. It looks to be about $15 more a month than what I'm paying now. Might do this all tomorrow.
