People who tinker with electronics say that Radio Shack was always a great place to get components, but I suppose they can get those at Fry's now.

they were always far too expensive, but they used to have things I needed that I could get nowhere else, lacking a music store nearby. Things like XLR-1/4 adaptors, 1/4-1/4 couplers etc.

Now I walk in to get something simple, like a digital audio cable and "well sir we don't have that in store...but we can order it online".

No, I need it today. Like an hour from now. Goodbye, I am heading to Worst Buy.

Radio Shack became irrelevant probably 15 years ago or more. When someone says, "I'm using a radio shack mic" it's another way of saying he/she is using a cheap piece of junk. The fact that their stores are still around is pretty remarkable. A store like Microcenter or Fry's is light years ahead of Radio Shack. Best Buy is okay if you need something right away, but if you can wait a week you can get new stuff or used stuff for so much cheaper online. I really do think Best Buy will be going out of business at some point, but I'm not really sure when. Sometimes it takes years for the giants to fall and sometimes they all topple quite suddenly.

The brick and mortar business model is dying specifically for electronics. The great Blockbuster Video was replaced by a Red Box. Don't think that Amazon.com can't replace Best Buy. Amazon is too efficient of a company for Best Buy to compete with.

Yeah, I don't see how they last more than another 10 years or so...but they are trying their hardest to keep people shopping there, which works out nicely for me...they've pretty much taken the "Prime" thing and made their own version of it for people who spend a set amount of money with them in a given year (free expedited shipping, extra rewards points, etc.)...and they seem to be getting more aggressive with the 0% financing...I love Amazon but if I can get an identical item at Best Buy for roughly the same price I'm likely buying it there...
