Looking to upgrade my iPad 1 to a newer model, in part due to the cocksuckers at Apple and WSJ making the WSJ app unavailable for my iPad1 for no good reason other than Apple marketing (let's face it, the WSJ app doesn't need fancy new hardware or iOS 8 to display news articles).

Anyway, I was debating whether my next iPad needs cellular capability or if I can get away with the wifi-only model. I will continue to need mobile service (outside my home's wifi) but I figure I will always be carrying my iPhone, which has the personal hotspot feature. Would there be a significant difference in speed/bandwidth when using the hotspot vs using cellular? I suppose there could be an issue if I'm streaming Pandora on my phone and surfing the internet on the iPad at the same time, but otherwise would there be any downside?

Fuck Apple. Go with a Samsung Android tablet & a Galaxy 5.

The difference should be negligible assuming both the phone and tablet would be using the same network connection type.

the biggest difference is, it can suck down more data when you tether because the device sees the connection as a hard-line wifi connection.

when you have built in cellular data, the device knows it needs to use that connection as efficiently as possible.

it can make a BIG difference in some apps and web pages

That would not be an issue. Chicagoland 4G is like 18 Mbit on average. And I assume your home network is similar or better.

Where you use the iPad would be your only consideration. If you only use it at home and Starbucks, go Wifi only.

And cellular companies give out data pretty cheaply these days. I think TMobile even extempts all "music traffic" from their data plans, allowing you to stream music without considerations to bandwidth caps.

You might have to add a tethering and or hotspot feature to your plan depending on your carrier if you're going to use hotspot frequently.
