I have an Hp2000 Laptop a little over two years old (I paid between 3 and 4 hundred for) and the cooling fan is not working. It no longer beeps nor can you hear fan turn on on start up. I turned it off until cooled down and currently works. However the vent is on the bottom o the laptop and I have it hanging off the side of a table so it does not overheat again. I called one place and they said 150 plus parts to fix. I watched a youtube on how to fix it and while I think I can do it, there were a lot of screws and pieces that needed to be taken apart. Not to mention there could always be more wrong with it i'm sure.

So do I buy the part and try to fix myself? Bring it to a store or just buy a new one?

I'd buy a new one before paying to have it repaired. But you should still try to fix it yourself. Googling your laptop model and cooling fan brings up a lot
of people with the same issue and plenty of how-to instructions for swapping out a defective fan.

Then you can use the repaired laptop as a dedicated porn machine. And the new one for your day-to-day laptopping.

I'd suggest Lenova (IBM's consumer hardware spin-off) over HP (or any other brand for PC laptops). Refurb'd Lenovas are good buys:

you can also find refurb'd machines on newegg.com and amazon etc. but i'd be wary of reburb machines via 3rd party channels.

A lot of those laptops come with old school, spinning-disc hard drives. Allocate funds to buy a solid state HD and swap out the HD's immediately, if you buy a laptop with a non-SSD.

oh, the link above is filtered by "i5" processors. i7's run hotter (reducing performance over time and shortening the life of your laptop) and suck more power (draining your batter faster). i3's are underpowered, imo. but it depends on what you want to do with the machine. AMD's, in my experience, run too hot to be a good choice for laptops.

course, we're only a few weeks away Black Friday and whatever they call the Monday after that--when the internet sites make their deals available.

I had a similar issue with my dell. It would overheat and shut off. I googled instructions on how to open it up. Yes there were about a million little screws. Turned out the fan was full of dust and gunk. Blew it all out and it has worked fine since.

To make working with and seeing tiny screws easier I wear a headlamp and reader glasses. Ensure you have the right size screwdriver and a small white bowl or ramekin to put the screws in to so you don't loose them. (the bowl being white helps me see the screws better).

I've got me a magnetic bowl... it's awesome. It sticks to ductwork and I just toss screws in there and I never lose them. They got mini magnetic bowls for like 5 bucks at Walmart. I got a full sized one at auto zone.

You all need one.

the old HP dv2000 line of laptops had terrible overheating issues. even when the cooling system was working perfect they still ran hot and often failed to cool the graphics processor adequately

for $150, you can buy a used elitebook 8440p that is a better laptop in every way, plus youll never have cooling issues. and if you ever do have issues of any kind, they are made to be serviced easily with parts for cheap all over ebay and whatnot.

i hate to say it, but a dv2000 laptop is just not worth fixing.
