It is a shame that her winning a pole and finishing in the top 10 is preventing the viewing public, the real racing fans, from seeing Scott Riggs take 4 laps around the track each week.



So, we've got someone bringing a bunch of money to NASCAR that drivers don't feel has a chance to win. Seems like a win for everybody.

how about downsizing the tracks to increase the competition? how about setting things up to promote rivalries instead of trying to market fake ones? my point is, of course nascar needs more publicity. so does my mom, but im not going to tell her to go to a strip club for employment.

I don't see how it is watering down anything. She's not taking Tony Stewart's place or Johnson's. She's a new team that is created for her. If she left, that ride is gone. It's not going to some other Nationwide star.

She's taking the spot of some start and parker and she is not as bad as people that just hate her want to believe. Even if she is only competitive at restrictor plate tracks, that's as good as some teams already.

She is a special case. There isn't going to be some flood of runway-model-type NASCAR drivers that just appear out of thin air. She is inspiring other women/girls to drive in the sport. That generation would have to work their way through, as she did. I just don't see how she is going to ruin the sport. I see it as a definite net positive.

I'm all for those other things you mentioned as well. Except for your mom and the strip club thing.

I think the other thing that gets lost on people, she comes from a racing family. Her dad raced a bunch of stuff from snowmobiles to midget cars and she did have a gearhead upbringing. It wasn't like she won some lottery to be the "it" thing and inserted into the highest levels of open-wheel racing on looks or PR considerations alone.

Now you can argue about the validity of some of her accomplishments, but the fact remains she is probably the most successful female in open-wheel racing ever. Yes, her lone CART victory came on a fuel strategy on a race in Japan that most people stateside probably didn't care about, but she worked her way up through the circuit, Formula Fords and other things which are very normal for any driver trying to break into open wheel racing. It isn't like Rahal-Letterman just signed her off the street on looks alone.

And as Ken has pointed out repeatedly, whether you like the reasons or not, racing is very much about sponsorship, and she has clearly demonstrated an ability to get more attention and casual racing fans to pay attention to the sport.

Juan Pablo Montoya was one of the most successful open wheelers ever, and his transition to NASCAR hasn't exactly resulted in top success right off. You could say the same about Speed, Hornish et.al who were some of the more accomplished open wheelers as well. Smoke is the exception to this of course, but we are talking about Tony Fucking Stewart, i believe he would be HOF calibre in any racing endeavor or classification, he's just that kind of generational talent... and obviously, he gets it-- as he is the one who has taken her under his wing. I get the hate, I really do... a lot of it just seems really uninformed, and as with anything in any sport.. people just love to hate what they do regardless of facts.

I just read a lot of the hatred here and other places as a certain confirmation bias i.e; if you think she sucks and her position in the racing world is completely without merit- you will tend to look for evidence whilst ignoring that she has gone through the proper avenues that anyone trying to get a foothold in the higher racing classifications would have.

my point is, if you like danica in nascar for ANY reason, you are not a nascar fan. real fans of the sport want to see the best drivers in the world, but they dont get that because nascar keeps whoring its spots out to pretty pubescent boys and a shitty female driver. i cant even stomach it anymore, i stopped watching nascar regularly a couple years ago and it just keeps getting worse.

last time i thought this was happening was jeff gordon. when he came into the league, i thought he was just some pretty boy that women liked, so he had a place in nascar. i fucking hated him, but he kept winning. after a few years of being the absolute best on the track, i changed my mind. i still think hes weird, but i respect the hell out of him because he has natural born talent that cant be ignored- and THATS what nascar needs.

danica has proven time and again she sucks. she is also a terrible driver. she is destroying the integrity of the game. but its supposedly OK because she brings in money! what a fuckin joke...

and thats where the real issue is. nascar IS wwe. thats why i cant stand it. even 3/4 of the drivers say it. they want to race, but time and again they go through a whole race in single file because they have to. its not real racing, and it has nothing to do with the absence of right turns.
