Gordon announced today that 2015 will be his last season to compete for a championship.

I have not been a fan of his during his career, but you have to respect what he has accomplished in his time. Will be strange not having him as an every week driver.

I would echo your comments, for some reason and I can't even name it I have never been a fan.

my nascar uncle is a gordon guy and i reckon this will be a poignant season for him. as it stands i think that gordon is the only driver left who can equal tony stewart's feat of being the only driver to win a cup in both the old points system and the chase points system, as jimmie didn't start winning his cups until they put in the chase.

I know the reason why I really didn't like him back then. It is the same a lot of fans I would guess. He was a threat to my guy Dale Sr. and his records/standing. Of the last so many years I would say I have come to appreciate him. That is probably since Jr. joined Hendrick.

Come to think of it, that is me too.

with the gordon/dale-sr stuff, wasn't there also a cultural element to it where jeff gordon was the brash cocky pretty boy outsider from california and dale was representative of the old guard from the south?

I've always rooted for the old guys in NASCAR..Petty, Alison, Parsons and now Gordon.

used to be a sport with a lot of grey hair. not anymore.

Earnhardt was sort of an asshat himself back in the day. I kind of missed those two decades of NASCAR when he achieved deification.

I did not like Gordon in his first few years because he always came off like a little prissy girl and was no doubt the complete opposite of Dale Sr.

Where does he place in the discussion of greatest drivers of all time?

Top 5? Top 10?

As much as it pains me to say it, he probably is Top 5.

yup.

but gordon kinda squashed all that with his skills. even people that still hate him admit he is an all time legendary driver. and nobody really had a reason to hate him either, he is an awesome dude especially compared to these new "legano" drivers.

any hatred we had for gordon fell within the nascar fantasy land. it wasnt personal, we just didnt like his nascar "avatar" if you will.

i agree. you have to put jimmy #1, but i think gordon is #2. im sure you put bobby allison and earnheart in there too but its hard to compare old to new drivers because the rules were so different and you KNOW for a fact the old boys cheated harder than bellichick on a bad day. and earnheart won because he wrecked more people than kyle bush so i think that takes away some of his talent ranking. earnheart is #1 as far as entertainment went though, by a mile.

I don't think I can go top 5.

1. Pearson
2. Petty
3. Earnhardt Sr.
4. Jimmie Johnson
5. Cale Yarborough

but i would think he is somewhere in the 6 through 10 spot.

no way in the world those 2 are above Pearson and Petty and Dale Sr.

Ike any list that doesn't have Petty in the Top 5 can't be taken serious in my opinion.

Mine would go:
1. Petty
2. Earnhardt Sr.
3. Pearson
4. Johnson
5. Gordon
6. Cale

I could go with that.

IMO Petty, Sr., and Pearson are top 3 in some order.

JJ has a shot to crack that top 3 in his career, but no one else is worthy.

For a time it looked like Gordon might be at the top of the heap, but he just did not get there. Great driver, but not top 3.

petty is in there.

but above jimmy and gordon? those guys won against the odds of uniformity. damn near racing ARCA their whole careers.

I was at the NASCAR HOF in Charlotte. Inspecting some old cars from the 60s. rolling tin cans filled with gas going 200 mph. "safety" equipment was a flimsy seatbelt. crazy. The cars today are more like rocket ships in terms of safety. OK, here's a massive security cage, now build a car around it.

chatting up the old-timer docent about David Pearson, he recognized I wasn't some johnny come lately, he gave me a free ride on the NASCAR simulator.

Davey Allison was well on his way too, before the tragic accident.

Daytona is less than a month. :D

Gordon was never somebody I could root for. The wispy mustache from his early days reeked of phonyness. He had more than enough talent he could drive open wheel cars. I believe he could of raced Formula 1 competitively.

Gonna be a great story all year for Nascar.

Is this confirmed, or idle speculation?

Yes that was the perception.

Indeed. CA has rednecks too.

Would love to see him race the Indy 500 this year. American open-wheel racing really missed out on him.
