Former Chicago Bears Safety Dave Duerson was found dead Thursday night in his Miami home, his family confirms.

"Our family asks that you please remember Dave as a good, kind, and caring man," Alicia Duerson, Dave's ex-wife told NBCChicago. "He loved and cherished his family and friends and was extremely proud of his beloved Notre Dame and ……chicago Bears. Please keep Dave and our family in your prayers."

Duerson, 51, left an indelible mark on the Chicago football world. He earned All America honors at Notre Dame University, and won a Super Bowl rings with the 1985 Chicago Bears.

He went on to win another Super Bowl title with the New York Giants before retiring in 1993.

After his 11-year NFL career, he followed his dream to become a manufacturer and owned and operated Brooks Sausage Company, later known as Fair Oaks Farms, where he supplied sausage to fast food chains.

Despite doubling his profits, Duerson fell on hard times, sold the business and went through a divorce from his wife Alicia after a public domestic dispute in South Bend, Ind.

The notoriety bled into his career and Duerson lost his position as a Notre Dame University trustee after the scrap.

Recently Duerson hosted an Internet radio show called "Double Time with Double D" on voice of America. He broadcast his final show Thursday.

Duerson leaves behind four Children, including a 15-year-old named Tregg who lives in Chicago.

I remember the day I passed him on the highway. He was in his porsche 911...and I was in a chevy cavalier wagon. Smoked DD 22 that day.

This is really sad... When u look at former pro jocks, DD seemed to seamlessly step into and succeed in the business world too. Granted, he's had his share of bad luck/situations in recent years, but you'd think that leadership he exhibited in all aspects of life could overcome. I also fear bad news from the coroner, as Dave seemed fit as a fiddle. Then again, being the sausage king of Chicago, maybe his arteries were clogged up.

Regardless, 50 or 52 is too young to die.

Gary Fencik had best look out, as Todd Bell, Duerson and Shaun Gayle have had the grim reaper in their lives way too early in life.

Is this true? If not then I can't understand why he would shoot himself in the chest. No one heard a gun shot either? Surely a bullet to the brain would make death less painful.

Duerson was an intelligent man....Jason Goff has the story on WSCR......Duerson seemed to have everything going for him..a sausage company supplying McDonalds which thrived...and then it went belly up for some reason....he was a well spoken dynamic presence...he served on the Notre Dame Board of Trustees....
Obviously something went haywire upstairs and he KNEW IT.....His brain is donated to study what is known to us as being Punch Drunk.....
I knew something was wrong he was charged with domestic violence...the incident happened at the Morris Inn...on Notre Dame's Campus before a Trustees meeting.....That sure was not Dave Duerson.....

Seems he knew he was brain damaged and there was not a damned thing anybody or anything could do for him...
This is just sad....

This is tragic, but the way it's being reported has a 7 Pounds feel to it - like Duerson killed himself to have his brain studied for the betterment of future NFL players.

Maybe that's just my perception of it - I don't mean to sound incompassionate.

I listened to his podcast last night (from prior to the Super Bowl) and he sounded in good spirits, closing out the show God blessing all the listeners.

RIP to Dave and God bless his family.
