Some of you know that on Friday I called a few local reporters. One of them just called me back and we talked for a little while. I'm not going to say who it was or specifically what we talked about because I didn't get his permission to post our discussion and don't think that would be right. Here's the gist of our conversation and my current thoughts on this whole fiasco afterwards.

This reporter (and IMO likely others) have spoken in detail with PA about the specific quote Mike made about Obama. I was told the quote from the transcript was to the effect of (and I'm paraphrasing) "The Black community wants to claim Obama as their own, but he gets his talent from his white side too". This context completely changes the tone of the statement in my opinion. For me it is no longer a racist statement, but just one of many moronic and unnecessary race related statements that fill his show nowadays.

I was angry because I thought he had said he "got his talent from his white side" as if that's where he got all of it. Considering the context now, I'm no longer angry or frustrated at North at all. I now just pity him, and the fact that he brings race into arguments when it is completely not needed. Now I'm not going to tell anyone how to feel or act after reading this, but knowing what I know now and looking back to it I think quite a few of us overreacted, including myself. That is all. Good day.

See, here's the thing. We add a word here, a word there, amd soon the whole meaning is changed for some. The station won't play the tape and the big picture is, in a world of people like Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, you name it, do we care about this mixed-race crap anymore? I don't, I really don't, I'm sorry I devoted as many words as I did to this shit, and that's why, earlier today, I decided I can't listen to this jagbag anymore, for whom the exact percentage of your parentage has anything to do with your value as a human being. I still don't excuse North and his pathetic obsession with this kind of nonsense. I just am weary of having anything to do with it anymore. If WSCR and the corporate bigwigs think this is still a worthy topic for morning drive-time radio, so be it. Tomorrow morning, I have to be on the road for work and I will give ESPN a try.

I think another reason some of us were so quick to jump on him is because of his history of saying rude and inappropriate things regarding race. Picture if this was Mac. He has no history of anything like this and would have clarified his statement both on the show and on the board.

With North, there's a history and after being called out on it, his reaction is to put real names on his site and over a 50K watt station, threaten lawsuits, and try to bully his listeners. His actions just confirmed how big of a pud he is instead of just putting things straight and clarifying like an adult human being.

There was childish behavior on both sides here.

Hawk, North was probably thinking that he gets into enough trouble with his own words. He doesn't need any help from others taking him out of context. I am by no means a North apologist but I can understand his point of view. He was only attacking the three listeners who he perceived as impugning his character, such as it is.

All he had to do was play the tape.

Quote BlazingSize:

Quote:
I heard it word for word. He started talking about doing a new record called "Secret Caucasian Man". Apparently, he just figured out Obama is mixed. I think PBS did a show last night.

He said, "The blacks like to claim him, but here's the thing, he gets his talent from his caucasian side!".

So, BlazingSize, will you admit that you were wrong? The post ^^^ attributes a much different quote to Mike.

well, I still scratch my head over that statement, but credit mike with stirring the pot, its a fine line he is walking, but that is his job. I don't hate mike, but if that is the type of radio he wants to do, I think wscr isn't the place for it.

I think mike is a good guy for the most part and I am a guy who pointed a finger in his direction when I shouldn't have and I am not to big to say "shame on me".

Please cite a few examples of why you think he is a "good guy."
I am baffled.

I'll take a go:

1. He knows sports.

2. He attracts listeners.

3. He's an excellent sponsor for his clients.

4. He drives ratings.

5. He's liked within the industry.

6. He's a good husband.

7. He's extremely principled.

Yes, anyone of us can find a fault in what he says, but you can't deny that he's excellent at what he does. Some can argue this, but most will not. Otherwise he wouldn't have achieved what he has.

- He doesn't know sports. He makes more stupid comments then any other host.

- He doesn't attract listeners. He got killed by MJH for the short time he did afternoon drive and currently a national sports show has beat him in the mornings for about 2 years.

Hey Rodeo and Tummy. You guys said that Paul Agase gave you the actual transcript of what Pappy said. Did Agase say North said it in the manner this reporter said? You guys didn't mention that. I think it might be the Score's position to the reporter when he asked. But I'm still skeptical. I think it could be spin.

I support his work with Humane Societys, he also dontates money to charities. I think that is the good side of Mike.

I dont like his show in its current format, I dont like the fact that on a all sports station we are forced fed his political opinion, his outlook on race and other issues that dont pertain to sports.

Yes, I am flip flopping here a bit, but in all honesty, I am doubting my "listening skills" and somewhat upset that I lit up a guy for something he didnt actually say. Yes, I would love to hear the tape, so for once and all we can know what he said, but that isnt going to happen I guess.

Beardown, it could be spin but at this point it really doesn't matter. If he said it in the bad way, PA or management would have grilled him if they wanted. If they're covering something up then that is obviously their decision. Right now though I don't have any reason to keep being angry and honestly don't want to be. I watch sports and listen to sports radio for leasure, not to get as pissed as I have been over this.

Plus, the reporter said he really wasn't too keen on writing another article about North's show because North loves the free publicity and he's just sick of giving it to him. He knows that this is staged to save the sinking MNMS ship and doesn't want to keep throwing him life preservers with the pub. It was a really level headed rationale and I am comfortable following suit.

After this it's pretty obvious. North is going to have to say or do something REALLY bad and quite public to be punished by the suits/sponsors. Barring that, he has no place in my head again. I never listen to his show and am not going to start so I can wait for him to say something bad or stupid. It's just not worth it. I listen to Mike and Mike until Mully and Hanley come on and that's just fine with me.

I'm outta here. This is too weird now. I relied on certain people here to tell me the truth. First, the people who heard it said 'intelligence,' then we're told by those who were privileged to hear the tape it was ONLY ONE WORD CHANGED: 'intelligence' to 'talent.' All of a sudden, we now hear the word 'too' should be added--a little word but an important change. And now, to top it off, people who bothered to write and complain say Mike is basically "a good guy." I don't want any part of this anymore. I still think his show is a piece of crap and many of his comments go way over the line, but even if you're going to make fun of someone and/or do satire, you have to have a basis of truth to work off of. From now on, I'll reserve my comments on the Score or MVP, or whatever, to what I hear with my OWN EARS and share my opinions with my wife ONLY, not in a semi-public forum like this where half-truths abound. It was fun while it lasted, but if it continues like this, those of us who had legitimate gripes with Mike North--and I still do, by the way--are going to end up being the assholes here. In fact, it's kind of looking like that already. Adios.

I assume that Paul Agase is telling the truth? Come one Guy's and Gal's, they wont play the tape, so unless they do, who knows what the truth is and I am not willing to bury the guys here who said they heard what they heard. Like everyone else, this subject is old and done, so we should let it die, but we also shouldn't leave 3 guys out to hang, especially when Paul and the boy's won't close it out and play the tape, to me it's a "unsloved mystery".

Yep, you're right! If North won't play the tape, something is amiss. Why should I believe anything Paul Agase says?

1. He knows sports. FALSE. He knows very few current players in all major sports and watches an occasional game.

2. He attracts listeners. -FALSE The All Sports station attracts listenrs

3. He's an excellent sponsor for his clients. - TRUE- He kisses their asses so he can take them to whatever new station he goes to

4. He drives ratings. - Up or down?

5. He's liked within the industry. - I think people like 'talking' with him because he is a goof, but do you ever hear him talk about any of these radio people as his real friends? They just dont want him to talk bad about him

6. He's a good husband. - Why? I have no proof execpt an arrest for hookers on North ave once, but I doubt this

7. He's extremely principled. - so is the KKK

If that is what was said, then why did it take 4 days to come out, and why would they not play the tape to clear Pappy ?
