Why does one shoot a horse?

Horse found shot to death day before race at Balmoral Park
Police are investigating the death of a race horse found shot in the head on a farm in Indiana a day before it was scheduled to race at Balmoral Park.

Lady May Z, an 8-year-old trotting horse, was discovered by its owner in a pasture on a farm south of Lowell Tuesday evening, officials said. The mare had been shot between the eyes.

"I think it was just a sick act," said Heidi Geib, who leased the horse and raced it at Balmoral and Maywood. "Somebody sick that thought that they would get pleasure from doing that."

Police said they believe the shooting took place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday. The horse’s owner, James Woodley, had been training another horse on an adjacent track and had left to return that horse to the barn, the Lake County, Ind. sheriff's office said.

When Woodley returned to the pasture, he found the horse dead with an apparent bullet wound between the eyes, police said. A necropsy is scheduled for today at Purdue University.

The horse had been entered in a race scheduled for Wednesday at Balmoral Park in Crete, according to the sheriff's office.

Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Michelle Dvorscak said Lady May Z had not been racing recently, and the Wednesday race was to be a "practice run" to qualify the mare for future track events.

Geib doubted the race had anything to do with the mare's death, calling it a senseless act.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff's office at 219-755-3346 or its hotline at 800-750-2746.

I am waiting for the day I see this listed as the reason Koyie Hill isn't in the Cubs lineup. Maybe that circular saw will come back to finish what it started.

An injured Clevenger is better than a healthy Hill. I dont think it is a coincidence that the team started winning once Steven Scott Clevenger got back on the team.

My guess is it was just some douchebag fucking around. I don't think the horse was marked for death. Probably just a wanton act of some scumbag.

The plot thickens...

'Bolt gun' used to kill race horse in Indiana
A race horse found dead in a Lowell, Ind., pasture was killed with a device used to slaughter livestock, authorities say.

Lady May Z, an 8-year-old trotting horse that was found dead Tuesday, was killed with a “captive bolt gun,” a device used to stun or kill livestock, according to necropsy results from the Purdue University Animal Disease and Diagnostic Laboratory.

The device caused massive blunt force trauma injuries that lead to the mare’s death.

Investigators originally suspected the horse, which was due to run a qualifying race at Balmoral Park the following day, had been shot with a low-caliber firearm, possibly even a stray bullet.

Investigators now believe Lady May Z was killed deliberately, a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s office states.

“In order for this weapon to be used in this manner, the perpetrator would have had to hold the device up to the horse’s forehead,” it says.

“The manner in which this animal was killed has led the Lake County Sheriff’s Department to believe that the (killer)… may have had prior experience in the meat processing field,” according to the statement.

Lady May Z was found dead around 6 p.m. Tuesday in a pasture adjacent to a training track near 245th Avenue and Colfax Road south of Lowell.

Anyone with information may contact the Sheriff’s Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau at 219-755-3346 or the anonymous tip line at 800-750-2746.
