Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka died early today, less than 24 hours after having a stroke, according to her office. She was 70.

Spokesman Brad Hahn told the Associated Press that Topinka reported discomfort yesterday and was admitted to a hospital in Berwyn. After undergoing tests she appeared to be doing well overnight before suddenly losing consciousness this morning, Hahn said. She was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.

Topinka, a Republican, won a second term last month in a tough race with Democratic challenger Sheila Simon, the former lieutenant governor.

Grim Reaper must have been around last night. Walked her down life's final hallway to death's door. Topinka probably resisted, but a gentle push from the scythe and one gentle comment would be all that was needed: "Judy Barr, the door."

Would have been better if her name was Kate though.

Anyway, yeah, she was a working politician and possibly one of the less corrupt ones in power in Illinois so sad to see her go.

Once Rauner takes office in January, it appears the state constitution grants him the authority to fill her seat for a full four-year term, though he also might have the option of scheduling a special election.

Nice reporting by CBS ... 'this might happen, or maybe this ... nobody really seems to care.'
