Is the MNMS so much of a corporate screw up that they signed such a great deal for North that they can't do anything about Mike except for not renewing his current deal?
Maybe. I honestly don't know. What's being missed here is the notion that "not liked by you (or us)" doesn't necessarily constitute zero ratings. He often loses to Mike & Mike, but there's still a listenership.
On the flipside, I don't know how much flexibility they have, vis-a-vis the contract. I would guess he has verbiage about final control of the show: co-hosts who are on it, time slot it airs on. Else why not move him to midday, or post-6pm? Because, now you have to find talent who can bring in equivalent ratings for the morning drive. What costs more? Keeping things as they are, with its deficiencies, or restructuring everything? Assuming they stay in-house, what would Hanley and Mully want? Murph's done it before, and has beaten Mike & Mike, yet he was moved out of that slot. Lightly-used producers and reporters?
The poll is interesting, but only if you poll the 100 (or however many) guys who form the basis of Arbitron's ratings. For the rest of us, our opinions are at best interesting, but that's it.
Like you, I find this interesting. Glad I can watch it from some distance...
