Sorry to hear that. Probably the most respected and revered coach in Illinois High School Basketball History. My condolences to you and your family. I actually know Arthur Agee from hoop dreams fairly well also.
Had a friend in college who stayed over one thanksgiving break, he was from Wyoming and a good HS basketball player where his team lost in the state finals his senior year, and he thought it was the coolest thing in the world when we saw Gene at a Thanksgiving Tournament and he said hi to us. The friend has a huge HS basketball guy and had watched Hoop Dreams a bunch. For us, seeing all these famous Chicagoland players and coaches is no big deal, but for a dude from Cody Wyoming who up until that point had never been in a city bigger than Dubuque, seeing the Coach from Hoop Dreams in action was a big deal to him. It was too bad he wasn't around during Christmas, dude would have shit his pants if we took him to the Proviso West Tournament.
Yeah it is amazing how big that documentary happened to be.
I actually played against Arthur after he'd transferred to Marshall and never knew that he'd transferred from St. Joe's. Knew of Gates of course as he was a pretty big thing before the knee surgeries.
That Pingatore stayed at St. Joe's as long as he did is remarkable. Definitely leaves behind a legacy that is unmatched in Illinois High School Basketball.
