My cousin, St Joseph’s basketball coach, all time winningest coach in Illinois, the guy from Hoop Dreams, and coached Isiah Thomas and the guy better than John Wall.

Sorry to hear that. Probably the most respected and revered coach in Illinois High School Basketball History. My condolences to you and your family. I actually know Arthur Agee from hoop dreams fairly well also.

Had a friend in college who stayed over one thanksgiving break, he was from Wyoming and a good HS basketball player where his team lost in the state finals his senior year, and he thought it was the coolest thing in the world when we saw Gene at a Thanksgiving Tournament and he said hi to us. The friend has a huge HS basketball guy and had watched Hoop Dreams a bunch. For us, seeing all these famous Chicagoland players and coaches is no big deal, but for a dude from Cody Wyoming who up until that point had never been in a city bigger than Dubuque, seeing the Coach from Hoop Dreams in action was a big deal to him. It was too bad he wasn't around during Christmas, dude would have shit his pants if we took him to the Proviso West Tournament.

Yeah it is amazing how big that documentary happened to be.

I actually played against Arthur after he'd transferred to Marshall and never knew that he'd transferred from St. Joe's. Knew of Gates of course as he was a pretty big thing before the knee surgeries.

That Pingatore stayed at St. Joe's as long as he did is remarkable. Definitely leaves behind a legacy that is unmatched in Illinois High School Basketball.

Just read where he was just out at Riverside Brookfield for the 2 day shootout the host every year. And still coaching during it. That's dedication.

And other than going gray he looked pretty much the same as he did when I was in high school.

You mean won't be matched in their ability to be insufferable pricks to 15 year old kids?

Devastating loss for that school. Their enrollment keeps dropping, in part because some parents now prefer Montini. (I've had family members go to both.)

One of my cousins was a St. Joe grad and credits him for increasing his love of sports beyond his original love of baseball. Their loss in 1979 (DuSable) was literally life-changing for him.

A person can both (1) have a wonderful high school experience and (2) realize that a 45 year old dudes cursing out 15 year old kids for failing to rotate on zone defense is pathetic.

Those things are not mutually exclusive.

Wow, the Molis brothers, haven't thought of them in 25 years, I think they
were recently named to the "all-hype" team.....

Man, I miss my yout. We used to go to Proviso West's tournament every year...

Stood next too Eddy Curry, sat next to Corey Maggette, saw Isaiah Thomas when St. Joe's was playing....
