I think Ted Cox did one helluva job on today's article...

My favorite paragraph: Still, it's amazing to me. Mike & Mike whipped North in Chicago and pretty much dictated the end of his 16-year run at the Score. It's like Pepsi outselling Coke in Atlanta - and getting it to alter its formula to boot.

Cox needs to remove his head out of Mike's rear end.

From Cox: "North embodies the Score brand. He is who the Score is."

See, this is the kind of crap I hate. One man is NOT the Score. We who listen ultimately determine who and what the Score is and just about every poll taken says around 70% of us were happy to see him go. How can the man who "is the Score" and "embodies their brand" be the only one there that can't seem to absolutely thrash national ESPN programming in his time slot? Cox really bought into all the North myth-making (a lot of it started by North himself, I think) with that garbage.

North, with his loud mouth, abrasive manner, stupidity, ignorance, and total self-centeredness does NOT represent or embody the Score, Chicago, or Chicago sports fans and I think the unabashed glee over his demise--the likes of which I have hardly ever seen over the demise of a local radio/TV personality--demonstrates that.

A lot of those words describe other hosts at the Score. They really don't have any great hosts. I wouldn't pick any of em to be "who the Score is."

They are all who the Score is. The Score is loud, abrasive, often stupid, and self-centered with some exceptions.

Based on the some of the early complaints I'm seeing, Mully and Hanley don't seem to be considered loud and abrasive--if anything, they're being criticized for being too "bland" and "easy-listening." Self-centered? No one else at the Score is even in the same ballpark, not even on the same planet, as North. Outside of Bernstein RARELY mentioning something his kids said or something he and his wife talked about at dinner, there is very, very little discussion of the hosts' personal lives on their respective shows as opposed to Mr. It's-all-about-me North. Stupid and ignorant? I may not always agree with what they say, but I usually find most of the other Score guys prepared, informed, and well-spoken, qualities I wouldn't use in describing Mike North.

Teddy's article is just more nonsense. North got all the respect he wanted, $1.5 mil a year. He never gave anyone else respect. Let's never forget, he turned down $800k, it has always been about one thing-the money.
Hopefully, these whiny articles will stop soon. Someone, anyone, tell me why another station would hire this ratings disaster to talk about anything? Just because someone has opinions doesn't mean everyone needs to be exposed to those opinions. WLS is a top ten station, why would they want to hurt their own current ratings to hire a proven ratings failure? What numbers can he bring?

I agree with Pappy's Crappy.

Also, between North and Cox, who has the worse picture on that page? I keep seeing that "dead behind the eyes" picture of Mike, so I'm assuming that someone in his camp thinks it looks good. Cox's hair looks pretty bad, IMO...almost Blago bad.

I'll elaborate.

Loud - North was probably the loudest and that factor may go away (mentioning it just made for good symmetry).
Abrasive - I would say the handling of phone calls specifically by B&B and some of the new generation is extremely abrasive and North took no calls whatsoever.
Often Stupid - the excessive use of drops, Murph's show, the "eeny-eeny" Boers humor, etc.
Self-centered - that is for the Score as a station and their company directive that nothing else exists, don't talk about the other show, don't talk about the other station, etc.

Things are going to change now that North is gone. I'll be interested to see if the tenor and image of the station is one of them. Based on the restrictions they planned to put on North, I doubt it.

Bernsie rarely talks about his personal life. Terry never does.

I don't mind loud and abrasive if you're not stupid. I can't stand loud and abrasive if you are stupid. Pappy was stupid.

I can't stand self-loving people. I really wouldn't describe B&B like that. Both of them have a healthy amount of self-hate. They can laugh at themselves at times. Pappy can't. He just thinks the world of himself and will praise himself whenever he can.

Yes, Bernsie will be rude to callers. But he's often right and they are wrong. And his callers are often stupid. It's his shtick. Sometimes he's wrong and just does it to live up to his persona.

Cox goes all over the place in this article. From head-up Papi's ass to explaining that the mythmaking that North had enjoyed, to talking about todays' realities. It read like an opinion piece, making me wonder where his position was on the whole thing.

That's horse shit. They may not be self loving in the same way but their show is all about them. They love their opinions and their entire show is about how smart, elite, clever, etc they are. The times I've listened it has rarely been about sports.

WHat does North have on Cox to get him to write articles like this for him?

Being "right" enables a person to be rude, especially if the other person is "stupid"? Where exactly did you pick up this gem of purported acceptable social behavior? Thanks for letting us know one of the Beardown social norms. I for one am glad more people in the world are not like you and Bernstein and we do not live our lives according to your uncivil rules of behavior. This world would be much more intemperate than it is already.

That can be said about pretty much all sports commentators. You don't think Scott Van Pelt doesn't come across as self-centered? Mike Greenberg, who can't stop reminding us of his college education? Dick Vitale? Chris Berman? Two guys who created this image and are now pale impressions of it. Steven A. Smith, who acts as if he was the one who taught MJ/LeBron/Kobe how to shoot? Dan Patrick, a guy I actually like, who name drops as soon as he can? Dan McNeil, the afternoon version of Mike North?

Part of a radio personalities draw is the self-confidence and self-centered attitude. The whole "I watch this stuff for a living, that's why your opinion is wrong and mine is right" comes from EVERY guy who broadcasts from either ESPN or WSCR.

Social norms Coast? It's a radio show. It's their schtick. Jeez. I think it works. I don't mind if they are rude to "Joe in Paletine." Joe in Paletine should go on with his life after they call him a dope too.

I get on Bernsie at times but I think he's a talent. If Bernsie were stupid it wouldn't work. But he's not. You can not like him if you want. A lot of people don't like that style.

The only show I listen to is MJH, a little of Murph if I'm in the car at the right time. The rest, to me,are are bunch of useless piece of crap. All negative every single day. They pick one quote from someone and run with it. Not giving us the whole interview, which is unfair since writers/radio reporters only report want they want to in the way they want to.
But it only reflects the reporting and altitude of most papers/TV/radio in this country. Glass is half full.

Who wants to hear political discussion from an uneducated, ignorant, racist boob whose comments consist of nothing more than talking points and straw man arguments ?

I would agree with all of this except for the first guy you name. I think Van Pelt is more self deprecating than self centered.
You can argue how genuine this self deprecating humor is, but I've never gotten a "holier than thou" vibe from SVP.
