we all love walter and longevity/availability matters but sayers was probably the better rb at his best

Sayers, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown....all better pure Running Backs. Payton was the better overall football player.

RIP Kansas Comet....definitely one of the best ever. :(

Barry Sanders was the best running back I have seen in my 40+ years on this planet, but almost every Boomer tells me Sayers was better.

Gayle Lynn per what I read.

I've known her for 40 years and have never seen her spell it that way. I distinctly recall the teacher who expressly asked her about that in a freshman history class. And the sour response she gave him.

And it's still that way on her Facebook page.

I met him about 15 years ago or so.

He struck me as an unhappy person.

But, RIP, maybe it was just a one time thing.

Always seemed intense and angry...possibly bitter knowing what he could have been.

Obviously didn't suffer racism well.

remember the famous walter payton interview on the score during it's heydey.

Payton was on w/ North/Jiggs and was saying there is a bears player who has always not acknowledged Payton or just treated him like crap.

North pushed and pushed on who it was and Payton gave in and said it was Sayers.

So sounds like there was some animosity from Sayers towards Walter that he took the crown as the most well known Bear.

But I always enjoyed when Sayers was on the radio. He always had good stories and insight to share.

RIP.

I met him when I was a kid at an autograph signing at a supermarket. I remember him being nice to me. “How you doing kiddo”. That sort of thing. I eventually got Payton to sign the same ball.

That’s one of my favorite sports memorabilia things

It seemed like he always felt the need to tell you how good he was, like he had a perpetual inferiority complex.

I remember he was on the Score probably sometime in it's first decade. He talked about in his youth when his family's dog numbers grew to large. He had the unpleasant task of lowering the count and it wasn't humanely done. Quite gruesome. I think North might of been the host, or whoever the host was was like wtf at the story. I'll always admire his football talent but a very creepy guy.
