Except for Bob Gibson. I loved Bob Gibson, especially when he wasn't pitching against Fergie Jenkins.

I read his autobiography at the end of his career, learned about the poverty and discrimination he faced, and his experience at Creighton. One of the autobiographies (along with Sayers' I Am Third) that shaped my understanding as a tween.

An ornery man, but a good man. And a hell of a baseball player.

Bill James said something to the effect of that his wind-up would have never been allowed had he come up today. Coaches would try to get him to have more "proper" mechanics, and it might have ruined him.

The only two non quality starts that year were 4 earned in 9 and 4 earned in 11.

Now I want to know who the last Cub was who through 11 IP in a game. I'm pretty sure it was Jenkins in 1973 against the Giants, who through 12 innings against the Giants and the Cubs lost in the 13th.

13 inning game in 3 hours. Stroke out 6 and walked 2 in 12 innings. Just a different game back then, wonder what his pitch count was. Be nice to see a game in which only six batters for one didn’t put the ball in play in 12 innings. Guess 7 if you count the one run he gave up being a solo homerun. Cubs had about the same results on offense (minus the home run).

No, I don't know if the one I read is still in print, it was published in the early 70s. Granted it was probably mostly pablum, but I was 10 so I wasn't exactly expecting Dostoyevsky.

I am pretty sure that Stranger to the Game was written in the 90s. It's probably still a good read.

It was. I met him at the old Borders in Schaumburg. He was an intimidating guy with a strong handshake even in his early 60s.
