Sportswriters on TV? Its an early memory, but a good one. Gramps watched it all the time and I think its a lasting memory of chicago sports history.

One of the great line sof all time when Telander was arguing how big soccer was going to be because of all the kids playing it in the school yards and Ben Bentley gives Telander a "All my grandkids play four square, is that going to be big too?"

That was a great show, and a lot of funny lines.

Great show. Back before sportscenter as a young kid late sunday nights used to be occupied by sports extra followed by sportswriters on tv.

Absolutely. I always used to get a laugh out of how Bentley, Gleason and Jauss took so much pleasure in blowing cigar smoke at Telander, who always "played up" his reaction.

That was great television! There are probably smoke stains on the lenses of those cameras that are probably in a garage somewhere by now.

I always thought these guys were revered in the industry until I saw Bill Jauss regularly covering Loyola U games.

Didn't Jauss get prime assighnments in the 60s and 70s?

I loved that show too. A lot of people think it was just a local Chicago show. It wasn't. That show was syndicated across the country. If you remember it wasn't just "Chicago" topics.

Beardown I love ya but that was a Chicago show. Back then, Sportsvision wasnt anything more than 99% local. Way before Fox Sports Net too.

Maybe when it first came out it was just Chicago. I don't know what year it started.

But in the late 80s or early 90s that show was syndicated across the country. It was shot in Chicago, of course.

I never saw much of the TV show but I never missed the radio show on 'GN. I believe it was Sunday afternoons around 3pm.

I'm old enough to remember "The Sports Writers Show" when it aired on WGN 720 Sunday afternoons & then shifted to ESPN Radio 1000 for a brief cup of coffee. When the TV version aired on the defunct SportsChannel & FOX Sports Net Chicago, the late host/moderator Ben Bentley would always say at the open, "This show was taped Monday. For those watching later in the week, you'll understand why these guys are making less sense than usual. Most of all, thanks so much for watching." If I remember correctly, Bill Gleason, a panelist on both versions of the show, actually created the show in 1975 for WGN Radio. While the radio version dealt with Chicago sports, the one that John Roach produced for the 2 regional sports networks seemed to deal with more national sports topics due to syndication. I think it was the predecessor to what the late Dick Schaap, John Saunders, Mike Lupica & company have been done for about a decade on ESPN Sunday mornings on "The Sports Reporters".

While on the subject, does anyone remember 2 other sports talk shows on the defunct SportsChannel & FSN Chicago called "The Back Table with Chet Coppock" & "Chevrolet SportsFire?"

Coppock would spend half the interview eating his food in front of the interviewee.

Sportsfire was terrible. The set was pure Wayne's World. The guests were disturbing to look at (Boers was a frequent guest). They all wore suits that Crystal Lake Hoffey wouldn't wipe his ass with. North's Basta Pasta show was in the same category.
