Louisville did get hit hard by the protests. There was a lot of shattered storefronts and empty buildings. But that main drag always had a lot of trendy places. Nashville is fun as was said in small doses. Way too crowded to get around.

In terms of their baseball chops, they have incredible teams. The best team we ever played was from Louisville. The lead off guy, the smallest kid on the team, took the first pitch and hit second base on the adjoining field. Every kid crushed any ball in the zone and would not offer at anything out. They had two teams like this in their tournament. It was the year we were a top five team in Illinois and went like 40-8…..

Shut the fuck up. Seriously. You have nothing to say.

Disregard everything this little fuck has to say. He's got the Ogie case of "Everything Illinois is bad." Ogie is actually interesting, though.

No offense.

Lol. I love Chicago……

Good spot to score, at least-or-so I've been told, hookers and/or blow, whatever you need. Lotta truck stops along the the freeway coming from the East on 71 to connect to 65 south down to Nashville, running right through the Churchill Downs area, if lot lizards or trucker-speed's yer thing.

My entire life the Sox have been among, if not the, cheapest ticket in baseball. That’s an interesting way of sticking it to the fans.

I don't think that's out of any sort of goodwill so much as just a lack of demand.

Reinsdorf--and Eddie Einhorn, patron saint of myopic television contracts--bought the team and were immediately disgusted by everything they saw. It wasn't just Harry and Jimmy, it was Andy the Clown, it was Comiskey Park, it was everything that made the White Sox edgy and different and weird. They wanted the Sox to be some antiseptic Yankee-Dodger hybrid for suburban families but they could never quite pull it off: they didn't make it out to the suburbs, the pay TV crippled them in relation to the free-TV Cubs, everyone bitched about New Comiskey for like 15 years and they still kind of do, and the fanbase never truly gentrified. I really believe Reinsdorf hates Sox fans in a way that goes beyond the baseline contempt that all billionaire sports team owners necessarily have for their customers. And that's how you end up with this bitter, decrepit old man who sits up in his office with Tony La Russa playing Let's Remember Some Guys and smoking while everything falls apart.

This was going to die no matter what. The Sox actually stayed weird and goofy a lot longer than anybody did, except the A’s, who are now Officially Dead. This half-hearted attempt to cater to the suburbs is kinda dumb, realistically they are still going right for the core audience with Polish Heritage Night and Union Night (which I swear used to be called Teamsters Night, but maybe I’m misremembering).

But realistically the Sox are keeping the dream alive more than anyone. There’s just only so much you can do these days with ninnies on Xitter and Soxtalk complaining about the perceived injustice of just about anything. I dare anyone to find a franchise still as rooted in its local community as the Sox still are, maybe the Packers but that’s it. It is a fucking miracle they kept Harrelson around as long as they did, he was well into cancellation territory for about a decade but they let him keep trucking on. What can you do when these guys get old and the only people you’ve got replace them are loser nerds like Benetti who they thankfully jettisoned?

It’s not like there’s a big crop of boisterous weird personalities to plug into the broadcast booth. White guys who show an ounce of character are non-starters, the threat of them saying the word burrito or doing a “hero me a sooo chineeezz” accent are just too high. The Sox could put a brother or even a pollock in the booth but Pierzynski doesn’t want it and none of the black former players are interested.

The pay-for cable TV is whatever. The AM radio dial was always free and the games have always been accessible to even the poorest Chicago families. If you want to watch the game “for free” there has been a lot of ways to do it.

My IQ just dropped 5-7 points.

Like most places in formerly low cost areas, Nashville is being colonized by gay libs from California seeking to make the place unlivable/expensive for the natives.

In a decade or two they’ll have successfully recreated the conditions they fled.

the locals made it unlivable / expensive on their own, converting available housing into AirBnB's, driving up the price of housing overall for everyone in the area.

He's already a Sox fan

a teacher I know moved to Nashville because of some generalized aggravation with CPS. She made it about five years before she realized how good she had it here. Expensive living and low wages with all of the same frustrations of any big city school system.

I feel like Nashville is the type of place that certain people think is paradise because they went there on vacation, like people who dream of retiring to an island

They moved en masse to fucking Idaho, Tennessee is like San Francisco compared to Idaho.

And as it turns out they lasted about five years in Idaho before all wanting to move back to California.

I believe that's Missouri, specifically Branson.

Heard somebody the other day refer to the chicks who get caught banging their underage students as "Missouri 7's".

It's been a few years since I've been in Nashville, but it was a very regular business trip for me from about 1996-2015. As in well over 400 hotel nights there over those 20 years. It's just a weird place. Segregated in little seemingly inoffensive ways that you don't notice on day 3 but are well aware of on day 300. A strange mix of good old country boys in their 50s and bachelorette parties. The area around Opryland floods at the drop of a hat. The K-12 schools are pretty mediocre. The food is nothing special unless you like their style of hot chicken.

Its main claim is that it is far better than Memphis.

When I was in college at Carbondale we would go down to Memphis all the time. Such a great town back in the 00’s all things considered. Poor, but had a lot of character. Downtown was surprisingly vibrant. Very similar outcome to St. Louis which has since plunged into an inexorable death spiral.

Hating on these places is ignorant. They were great cities once upon a time.

We took a family vacation to Memphis one year because my dad and I wanted to go to the Stax museum, Sun Studio, all that stuff. The museums were all very cool, the food was amazing, but Beale Street had an undeniable Tourist Containment Zone feel and the rest of it looked like a worse Milwaukee.

I worry about the long-term future of the Grizzlies since they just hit 20 years on the arena and that's about when the begging tends to start these days. I don't think the NBA ever really yearned to be there (Stern's main goal seemed to be keeping them out of Anaheim and St. Louis) and they've never had local ownership. I can't imagine where they'd go, especially if Seattle and Las Vegas are already set aside for expansion, but it feels like they're closer to the end than the beginning. It's too bad.

Mergers and acquisitions killed St. Louis. It was a big headquarters town for a long time and so many ad agencies did good business there. But those all got shut down or turned into branch offices and then shut down. Real shame.

What may have changed since your times there is the number of homeless people. I've had a few business trips there in the past few years. Running in the morning I'd have to literally step over people sleeping on the sidewalk.

Given the choice I'd take two nights in Memphis over two nights in Nashville every time. I get that Memphis has its issues but the music and food are like no other.

They chased around 100 unhoused folks out of a park on the west side near the Wal-Mart (which pretty convenient spot) and they just dispersed to those camps along the river/ under the freeway. When that 6'7" drunk college kid (Riley Strain) fell in the river walking the wrong way back to his hotel from Broadway last year cops rousted those camps near the river on rumors that homeless folks had robbed, killed and tossed him in the river. Dude fell in on his own, walking and texting.

2 year old girl was living in the Wal-Mart area homeless camp. DCS took her up out of the camp away from her dad who lived there. A few months later Ariel the 2 year old OD'd on fentanyl in a state-funded transitional housing facility, where her grandmother (young dad's mother) was staying. Sad to say Ariel'd prolly still be alive if they had left her with her dad in the homeless camp.

I can only take Country and Western (both kinds) in small doses, and much prefer blues. And I can get my fill of bachelorette parties in Vegas. Or downtown Chicago, or Arlington Heights for that matter.

Yes, BBQ, but it is different. Dry rub, with sauce as a garnish. Those looking for copious amounts of SWEET BABY RAYS slathered all over would be sadly disappointed. And Irish Coffees or Bloody Mary's at the Peabody lobby bar while watching the duck promenade is a unique experience.

So my take with Beale St. is that while it was tacky they certainly had real fucking musicians there. Ancient blues dudes, certainly all done in by heart disease by now, who could rip it. It came in a glossy package, but it was legit.

Nashville now has that. I loathe pop country but there’s an entire genre that has grown out of Tyler Childers and Billy Strings that’s definitely the best music being made today. I would argue its even better than the pop punk 00’s indie rock that I treasured so much.

It's interesting to read everybody's criteria on assessing these places (Louisville, Nashville, Memphis). I'm spoiled by Chicago, but they're all on a lower tier from Chicago and calling them "great cities" is a stretch. They might be good places to spend a long weekend, but that's about their limit.

It kind of is. Reinsdorf was the impresario of every labor battle in the '80s and '90s, and then, even after he successfully couped a Commissioner of Baseball, lost the war and watched payroll go way up in concert with all the sabermetric developments. He didn't want to be a part of either and ran a dinosaur of an organization where all that really mattered was being competitive within the division and getting to sit around telling old baseball stories with Ed Farmer. Then he won a championship because Jose Contreras and Jon Garland decided to become unhittable, but that's beside the point. Moping around missing the Brooklyn Dodgers is at the other end of the horseshoe from hiring a search firm to find a general manager.

beautiful!!!

by the way, sabermetrics came AFTER the Sox won the World Series, not before. AFTER.

Yep. Good weekend cities. They are probably nice places to live if you are wealthy, but anywhere can be nice when you are wealthy.

As a tourist, my order would be:

Louisville
Memphis
Nashville

I think Memphis is a lot more dangerous if you live there so the ranks would be different if that is the consideration

There are other cool places as well. Arcade Diner was Elvis favorite and my boys loved the fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Memphis has legit history. I thought the museum they made by preserving the motel where King was shot was great. They have a stop on the underground railroad. As someone said, Sun Records was an excellent museum. Peabody hotel is fun. Graceland is a tourist trap but something to go to once in your life

It definitely has an old south vibe. I don't think of Tennessee as being the real south. It's more apalachian to me. However, with memphis you can throw a stone and hit mississippi and alabama. It's like a gateway

They are all just too fucking hot. Even Chicago has gotten too hot. It’s late October, it should just be consistently in the 50’s give or take. Instead it was almost 70 in Duluth yesterday and will be again today.

Very moving. Especially when you get to the end and you're in his actual motel room.
