Sales died Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week.

Always sticks in my mind, during the baseball strike, Charlie Steiner doing a live report outside MLB HQ in NYC, and five seconds into the report Soupy Sales walks out of the building and Steiner stops the report to says "It's soupy sales...." Steiner turns around still in his live shot and yells "HEY SOUPY!"

I was channel surfing late one night last week, and Soupy Sales was one of the celebrity contestants on a 1987 episode of the "$100,000 Pyramid" with Dick "The Vampire" Clark on GSN: The Network for Games. The other celeb, if memory serves, was an actress named Mary Cadorette, who played John Ritter's TV girlfriend at the end of "Three's Company", circa 1984, and co-starred in a short-lived spinoff "Three's a Crowd". I have no idea what Mary's doing these days, but I'm old enough to remember Soupy constantly getting pied in the face back in the day.

 Seriously, Phil, someone I think you know as well as I do, Kevin Matthews, joked that Dick Clark looked like a vampire because he never seemed to age like most of us do when we get older. Unfortunately for Dick, his own health in recent years has started to wane, which may explain in large part why Ryan Seacrest has done the heavy lifting on Dick's annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" show every New Year's Eve on ABC the last couple of years and why Dick has taken on a considerably less role.
