Sad story. I can relate on some level. Way back when...I was playing Little League ball when one of my closest friends got hit by a pitch directly in the chest / heart. He died. I still played baseball all the way through high school...but my love for playing the game sort of died that day too.

A 15-year-old boy died after colliding in midair with another baseball player at first base.

Fox30Jax reports on what police describe as a "freak accident."

It didn't matter what position Andrew Cohn was playing on the field, he just wanted to be in the game.

"That was a big thing for him," said his father Harold Cohn at their home on Sunday. "Ever since he could walk he was always playing something."Saturday, the 15 year-old was playing first base for his team the St. Marys Riverdogs out of Georgia. They were taking on the Jacksonville Hitmen at Dinsmore Park. The Riverdogs don't have a home field in Georgia so they play their games here in Dinsmore.

"It was a routine play at first base," said Cohn's father.

Cohn was trying to make an out and had his hand outstretched to catch the ball. Witnesses said he stepped in the base path and collided with the runner. Both fell to the ground. Andrew didn't get back up.

"Apparently it was just the manner in how it hit him and it caused the damage. Just one of those freak things you don't ever anticipate," Cohn said.

Andrew was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Doctors are still trying to figure out how the collision killed the teen. According to Andrew's family, they were told by doctors there was internal bleeding involved. An autopsy will be performed to find out the exact cause of death.
