This might be a little bit off the sports beat but then again maybe not. Read today's Mary Mitchell column in the Chicago Sun-Times. She mentions she got trashed by "her critics at the SCORE" on Tuesday. She didn't say which critics and I can only assume it was MNMS. She wrote a column on why was there a difference in coverage in the Chris Vaughn family murder case vs the Bobby Cutts pregnant girlfriend case. She even took her fellow Sun-Timesman to task (Neil Steinberg) for writing a column attacking her for her stance! Good Stuff!
Now Mary would be a great person to replace Ann as co-host! Kinda like Jiggs but with balls! LOL!
Why is it that a potential murder suspect was allowed to leave the state and Tank Johnson had to get permission to travel to the Super Bowl?

Do you remember that old Four Eyes TV commercial where the women has her eyes pop out when she hears the prices of the glasses? That was sooo Mary Mitchell, or the best look-a-like in town.

Mary Mitchell's work is as formulaic as Mariotti's. The columnist's in the Sun Times are predictable almost across the board.

Her work is generally shallow and one sided. I don't respect her as a journalist or as a reporter. I imagine the Sun Times does not either given the location of her column.

Do they have another African American columnist? Is the Sun Times or the Tribune a more popular newspaper in the African American community? If you can answer these questions you will be able to find the consistency between my opinion and your facts.

GD is largely correct, Mary Mitchell is pretty one sided. Personally, she seems shrill, judgmental and more than a bit odd. However, so are virtually all columnists, it's what they are paid to be professionally, and it seems to blend into their everyday personality.

I mean, Richard Roeper is a fairly simple, happy go lucky glorified entertainment reporter, Neil Steinberg is a fairly narrow person who revels in telling us about his higher brow leanings and suburban lifestyle (when not avoiding his, um, deeper personal problems) and Mark Brown/John Kass want desperately to fill the long departed Mike Royko's void. (and he was as crusty and self centered as they came)

To analogize to Hitler and his puppy isn't fair however. Ever seen most of the 'national' editorial columnists, and especially that Betsy 'something' who screeches about her single parent status, or that fat bastard Mark Steyn(spelling?), most of them are fear or hate mongers without similar criticisms when they are discussed.

I mean really, which ST columnist has recently broken a story, or fully, fairly vetted an issue recently? Telander, Feder, Jesse Jackson, John O'Sullivan,... Novak??

I recognize that you are not calling her Hitler, my point simply is that to use a Hitler analogy here, like in most instances, is out of proportion.

Having just read today's column, I must disagree with you even more strongly GD, she's right on today. While I could accept an argument from Steinberg wherein he laughs at the notion of a calm, tempered argument with Mary Mitchell, that aside I don't think that he could hold his own with her since he seems to be little more than an effete functionary who simply fills space in an attempt with a narrow demographic (like Mitchell, different group)

There was a double standard, and every person is entitled to the better treatment, but sensationalism sells and higher standards across the board are a pipe dream.

Now I'm sure that was intended as a shot at white guys - which can be interpreted as mildly racist. However, given that Steinberg is Jewish she probably could have chosen her words a little more carefully.

And why was she open minded in the Mark II case? Because there was a white person who stood up to the injustice. This resulted in an inability to use her daily formula.

Sue Ontiveros is a frequent editorial contributor to the Sun Times who is given the job of presenting a minority perspective as well. However, unlike Mitchell, she discusses broader issues and writes about them in a way that is relevant and thought provoking to the general population.

Mary Mitchell is a one trick pony. She writes nothing thought provoking. She provides no solutions to the injustice. In fact, as with most self appointed ethnic/racial representatives, it is better for her bottom line if there is no solution. In short, she does not forward the discussion (which is one of my principal complaints about her sports equivalent Mariotti).

She simply chronicles events. However, it is really the same event day, after day, after day, after day. Wake up, find an African American that has been mistreated, take quotes from one side, write column, go home.

It is a big city. Innocent people are harmed through no fault of their own literally every hour of every day. If you want to rail about it and not get an answer, go to church. I'll spend my time working against it on the micro and macro levels.

and that's also where she is also way off. how many white guys will even go to predominately black bars and clubs?

Steyn is a pretty good writer, but his best work isn't in the Chicago Sun-Times. Most of his CST columns are red meat for the base, and you're only going to like them as much as you agree with them. He does more serious art criticism for the New Criterion, and up until recently he did a very fine job writing obituaries for The Atlantic. Also, his columns for the Wall Street Journal, when he does write for them (which is somewhat rare), are a lot more serious as well. And even in the newspaper columns like those he writes for CST, he has a much firmer grasp of language than most columnists.

Clarence Page and Leonard Pitts Jr., both you can find in the Trib and both write mostly about issues in the black community make Mary Mitchell look like the hack she is.

Writing is not an easy job! Read some of the post on this board! LOL!
I don't like most of Mary's columns or her writing style! But that goes for 90% percent of all the newspaper writers in the city!

My favorite Mary Mitchell column - where I agreed with her - was the cultural confusion faced by adopted Black kids raised by White parents. My ex-wife & her newer husband are Italian & Irish and they're raising 2 Black kids in a White neighborhood. (Geneva) They act & talk White but look Black. My ex goes crazy when people say "Are you their nanny?" Mary Mitchell said it's a crime that more Blacks don't adopt & I agreed.
