Be that as it may, Chicago has enough bad publicity so I wouldn’t be celebrating the potential shutdown and real slowdown of its recognizable tourist attractions. The article said summer business was 15-20% of normal. These are the types of impacts people like me and Jorr keep bringing up.

I used to work for one of the boat ride companies when I was younger. I've stayed in touch with a lot of those guys and they say the last couple years they've noticed a significant dropoff. Now they think its armageddon, and it has nothing to do with the corona.

Chicago reputation has gone international. The Laquan MacDonald situation then the Jussie Smollet fiasco and now its ground zero for this BLM looting bullshit. That's on top of the gun violence which is genuinely developing world.

I dont know if any city in the world has seen its reputation and status plunge as much as Chicago has these last fifteen years.

I never lived in the city. But I did attend UIC in mid-90’s. And I recall what the city looked like back then, like driving to the UC along Madison or much of the South Loop. I think the redevelopment from the Loop outward has been impressive. The River Walk is really nice. The area where Cabrini used to be. Etc. There has been progress from my suburban point of view.

But from a purely reputation point of view, Illinois and Chicago have taken lots of hits. The biggest issue for me is the trajectory. The population bleed caused in part due to fiscal issues (taxes) along with the already impossible to fix weather makes the future look bleak.

While I largely agree, Chicago in the middle 90s coming off a really big drug war and murder epidemic, was much nicer than the 80s, which in turn was undeniably nicer than the 70s, where the Loop was a group of crumbling old buildings where no one would willingly be after 5pm or on weekends.

And most of the neighborhoods, white and black needed major rehab.

Tourism to Chicago is dead, Chicago's little flirtation with being a "global" city is dead (more like it has a global airport). In a way this might be Actually Good, as the infantile obsession the city government had with being recognized took up basically all of their attention. But it wont, because now there's gonna be a giant hole in the ground where there once was millions and millions of tourism dollars.

Nothing bad happens to tourists. Quit being scared of your own shadow.

Bernstein loves to call Chicago a global city. I always laughed when he did. It's not and has never been. There are only a handful of them and Chicago will never make that list. But I don't live there and should probably STFU.

Take a vacation from Black Livers Matter! Exhausted by demonstrations, marches and demands? If you stay in Reader's neighborhood there will be no signs, no social media mentions, and news will be selectively edited so that you will not hear about this movement for the length of your stay. The windows might be boarded up, but there will be no messaging or murals - just that natural plywood color you remember from 1960s era post riots.

I don't know what it takes to be a "global city", but it is something the the 8th biggest in terms of GDP. And it at one time hosted millions of business travelers every year, and it was in the top two or three for the number of conventions. The houseware show alone was bringing in 100,000 attendees, exhibitors, and support staff from around the world.

If we think the state is bad now, when Chicago goes it's going to be really bad.

I have come to see opportunity and solace in this reality. Part of this comeuppance for not taking the austerity pill in 2008, but in a way I'm glad we're in for it. The 2020's are going to go down as the lost decade.

So in other words, they're following Neiman Marcus, Brooks Brothers, Lord and Taylor and most of the big box retailers I never anyone around here talking about shopping at.
