I believe the later-period color episodes of Andy Griffin that everyone keeps alluding to were actually a spinoff series called Mayberry RFDC.

Those definitely sucked

According to wikipedia.org, "Mayberry R.F.D." lasted 3 seasons on CBS from 1968-71 and had Andy Griffith as one of the show's executive producers. It did feature the late Frances Bavier as "Aunt Bee" for the series' first season, George Lindsey as "Goober" and Ken Berry as widower farmer "Sam Jones".

Although there were 78 total episodes of the "Andy Griffith Show" spinoff, CBS cancelled the sitcom in 1971 as part of what was called a "rural purge". That sitcom, along with "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Green Acres" & "Hee Haw" were cancelled that year in an effort to seek a more urban image as a network back then.

If I recall correctly, the "rural purge" coincided with the ascendance of the grittier, less pastoral sitcoms such as "All and the Family," "The Jeffersons," and "Good TImes," created and executive produced by former Bulls Guard Norm Van Lier.

Moment of silence for Norm Van Lier please...Thank you.

Actually, I think you meant NORMAN Lear. He was known for envelope-pushing sitcoms that were ahead of their time for 1970s TV.

Sorry...That's Norman FELL. The actor who played "Mr. Roper" on "Three's Company" passed away years ago.

Thank you, Frank Costanza! I had no idea that Norman Lear invented the Lear Jet. I guess SHARK! could not be bothered to print this relevant fact.

SHARK! is slipping as a reporter. It is quite sad. Willie Mays and 1973 World Series, anyone?

I don't think so. The show quality dropping off for most viewers followed Barney (Don Knotts) leaving...which also coincided (roughly) with the conversion from B&W to color.
