This isn't a surprise.

I've always been pro-player. I don't root for billionaire owners. But the player has to understand that the relationship between him and the fan is altered when he makes more in a day than the average fan earns in a year. And I don't begrudge the player his money. Better in his pocket than Reinsdorf's. But it doesn't stop there. Remodeling of the clubhouse takes precedence over amenities for fans. Like I'm supposed to care if Kris Bryant has a bigger locker? Give me a break.

I didn't think that game should be cancelled either. We're sad so fuck the paying customer.

Why do you care so much? This isn't affecting you directly is it? I don't think you care that much about Marlins fans.

I don't "care so much." I'm just pointing out the separation that has occurred between the fan and the player in my lifetime. I don't really have an issue with the game being cancelled after a player's death if that was all it was. But it's just an example of the way the entire game is now built around the concerns, conveniences, and feelings of the players with precious little regard for the fans.

That's cool to stick up for the fan, but you've kinda muddied up this thread with a concern seemingly only you have on this board. Fans are never going to rise up and demand fair attention when the entertainment value is still very high for all 4 major sports in this country.

You took your stand. Stated your opinion. And it looks like no one agrees or cares all that much.

I had a few in consideration on page 2, but this is much more fun helping you spin yourself in circles. Still think you're a great poster tho.

I'm not "spinning in circles". I'm gonna guess I've bought more baseball tickets than anyone here (now that Agg Bob isn't around). I'm always going going to look at things from the fan's perspective.

IMU is a great Cub fan. It would be sad if he died. I doubt the Cubs would cancel a game if he did. I just don't see the player as more important than the fan.

Maybe because there are millions of U.S., and less than a 1,000 professional MLB players.

Right. And that's why they get paid what they do. But there aren't millions of fans who attend more games and care about the Cubs more than IMU does.

I think IMU would be satisfied if the board took a collective day off from posting if he died.

Fernandez would be great even if the only thing he had ever accomplished in the game was to make Brian McCann cry.

I feel bad for this kid and his family. I think he leaves a pregnant girlfriend behind. Just awful.

But the cancellation of the game is just another example of the game being more about the comfort of the players than any regard for the paying customers. The players are quick to spout platitudes when the tired cliche' supports their interests, like, "it's just business." But when it goes the other way, fuck the fan. What about, "the show must go on?" There's probably some guy out there who planned his whole month around taking his kid to that game. Now that child can't smell the grass and that helps Jose' Fernandez how?

The reason why I can't stand Joe Girardi is because he urged the players to go on strike (when he played for the Cubs) because of this (general) reason--the comfort of the players, their wish to make the game all about their needs. Pampered fucks.

I have to point out that the Sox let me out of tickets after my brother died last year. I called them and asked them if they could give them away, they asked why, they said yes. An hour later they called me back, refunded the money, and gave me four free tickets (Section 161) to another game. I guess the Sox feel they have to do that, but they didn't have to do it.

That was nice on the part of the Sox. But to me, the fact that I'm surprised they did is the problem. Most other, far less lucrative businesses would do something similar without a thought.

I agree with the larger point--your larger point--that the fan usually doesn't matter. I guess we don't even expect them to. This was a surprising exception.

I'm edging closer and closer to not watching any sports because it's not about winning as a team at all. It's about individuals competing for their personal goals and gaining admission to the country club. I don't think that the team matters much. So why am I subsidizing this again?

You need to watch more Cubs baseball if you feel that way FKA. Very much a team effort w/ minimal ego.

didn't know jose, never met jose, hard to rally something more than a Donne'ish No es el hombre y la isla empathy for a guy who was recklessly partying on a boat at 3 AM the night before a 1 PM start. Wonder if he/they (there were 2 other people on the boat with Jose) at least got to blast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQlIhraqL7o before they went out. And really hope Jose was having a brokeback fishing night with some buddies and Jose's recién embarazada girlfriend was not one of the two other people who died.
