None of these Resistance libs who are performatively mourning John McCain had a single kind word for him when his likability was what stood between Barack Obama and the presidency. Did you respect him then? No, you were calling him a racist piece of shit because he was already formulating the response "no, he's a good person" as some woman was calling Obama an Arab. Get over yourselves. Trump sucks and McCain's not great either.

MANY have always liked McCain even though they didn't vote for him for various reasons. Besides death usually makes folks remember the best about you.

Nothing funny about it.

He didn't have the decency to say the name of the defense bill because it had McCain's name on it. There are times when setting aside pettiness is a great idea. When a man is dying and the day he dies are 2 of them.

There isn't a reasonable Obama voter who questioned McCain's heroism or patriotism. The unreasonable are still saying his 82% conservative record wasn't maverick enough. They're saying he should have been like blue state Susan Collins.

God’s honest truth...the only reason I voted for Obama in 2008 was Sarah Palin.

If Obama were any other Democrat a lot of liberals would have crossed over and voted for McCain. McCain wouldn't have needed to reach for Palin. His Joe Lieberman instincts were right. It's possible that he would have been president if he didn't allow others to talk him out of it.

The media was so in love with Obama as to make Hillary in 2016 look like a passing crush. They'd have pushed him over the finish line if they had to.

Obama is the definition of celebrity president. All his fawning late night appearances and cocktail toasts. Nobody ever has been more in it for the glory than Obama. You know this because he never did anything policy-wise to show he gave a flying shit about the average American and his "signature" legislation compromised the people's well-being for insurance industry profits. A total joke of a president who's legacy will be illegitimately propped up by a fawning media.

Pretty remarkable how he just got a total pass for all the Blagojevich shit that went down in Illinois right after he won. Where was the witch hunt when his senate seat was being auctioned off?

Hilarious that you think that common crook Illinois scumbag who just wanted to hang out with celebrities had even the slightest bit of integrity. If his skin was any other color you wouldn't have a decent thing to say about him.

Obama's legacy is the Republican Party winning thousands of elections around the country during his presidency because nobody thought it was important to control anything but the White House and by extension the Supreme Court. And now it's illegal not to buy crappy health insurance, that too.

We already have an indication of how to answer the first question from the plethora of tributes pouring in from McCain’s political allies and former opponents such as President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, not to mention McCain’s many, many friends in the media.

And indeed, for much of his career (and particularly after his 2000 presidential bid), the media played a willing role in helping McCain to craft his reputation as a political “maverick” and honorable statesman. There’s a simple reason for this, apart from his status as a war hero: McCain was always willing to give the media access, the thing it craves above all.

Where's the lie?

Probably because McCain did more in a year than Sanders did his whole life.

I don't think Obama tore the country in two, I think people's reaction to him did. Now he can't control that, though like I said earlier he was never shy about basking in the adulation, so I don't totally hold the current state of things against him.

There is no lie, except that you can't shit all over McCain while worshipping the altar of Obama. Ones just an older, whiter (and now deader) version of the other.

I don't see any reason to bash McCain (or anyone else) in the wake of his death. What I do find strange- and this is tangentially related to McCain- is the sudden liberal obsession with Russia/Russians as irredeemable mortal enemies. At least McCain's feelings on the matter were honestly earned with five years in a commie prison.

It seems MANY are unable to separate John McCain the Navy Pilot from John McCain the Senator. The former is absolutely an American hero. The latter is the one to respectfully disagree with.

John McCain is the kind of hypothetical politician people want but don't like in practice because 1) Still mostly Republican and 2) Not Republican enough.

The only thing even slightly remarkable about this particular death is the absolute shitshow of a horserace to write *the* essential John McCain eulogy. Every thought about this has been utterly stupid.

The media isn't just evil anymore, they're dumb too.

Actually, I think Cheap Charlie is right on this: Obama's legacy is Donald Trump. Obama campaigned on a populist platform, but quickly betrayed his stated allegiance to ordinary people so he could pursue a largely neoliberal agenda. Disillusionment with Obama's presidency stoked anger among the electorate and paved the way for the ascendance of Trump's reactionary populism.

Not too many discuss this. Obviously, you can point to things that Obama did that people regard as good. I never got the feeling though that he lived up to the promises (real or imagined) that were in his campaigns. The mad rush of hope and change surrounding the start were not possible to live up to maybe?

I'm so sick of that video being held up as an example of McCain's moral rectitude and civility.

That whole incident was nothing more than political theater revealing a new dimension to McCain's hypocrisy, his defining feature throughout his political career.

McCain wanted to claim the moral high ground while letting Palin take a hatchet to Obama by linking him to Ayers, the Weathermen, and domestic terrorism. Based on this rhetoric, it wasn't much of a leap for this woman--did we ever find out her name, by the way?--to assume that Obama was an "Arab". Incidentally, McCain's rejoinder--that Obama is a "decent" man--is awfully curious.
