Checking out some airchecks on youtube, it's like when the Springfield kids go to Shelbyville and find their just-a-bit-off counterparts, except it's one of Johnny Mars.

my pick-ten, always mostly subject to change:

Moving in Stereo by a furlong
All Mixed Up
Heartbeat City
Touch and Go
Drive
Just What I Needed
You're All I've Got Tonight
Why Can't I Have You
Magic

First album should have opened with "Just What I Needed," that riff should have been the world's needle-drop introduction to the Cars, but the greatest hits album got it right. The saxophone + square wave outro on "All Mixed Up" is like salted caramel, the combination you never knew you needed. "Drive" and "Magic" are probably corny choices but they were old Loop chestnuts I loved in high school, what can I do?

"Let the Good Times Roll" is a very serviceable debut album opening track/riff.

"Candy-O." Everything in that song is near perfect.

I get persnickety about wasted opportunities for opening tracks on debut albums sometimes. Like, I can't believe "Reel Around The Fountain" opened the Smiths' debut when "This Charming Man" was right there. "Best Imitation of Myself" should have opened the first Ben Folds Five album, but I know better than to expect a spirited discussion of Ben Folds Five.

I'm not going to make a case for my personal favorites like the Replacements, Mink DeVille, Velvet Underground, or the Minutemen. They didn't really sell records. But I think any realistic list of the greatest American Bands would have to include Creedence, the Eagles, and the Byrds.

Then Guns n' Roses, Talking Heads, and maybe REM belong up there.

Probably.

REM is trash.

I do not like Guns n Roses whatsoever, but I'll conceded that they were quite special and would think they at the very least deserve to be in the discussion for a place on a top 20 list.

CCR and the Eagles definitely belong. The Byrds are worthy of discussion as well.

I have no problem with anyone’s taste in music but calling REM trash is a decidedly bad take. They were very important in exposing the world to the indie music scene and did so for more than a decade without selling their souls. Like most bands they tailed off at the end but that doesn’t diminish their legacy as one of the most influential and successful bands of the 80’s/90’s.

Yup

Ben Folds is probably the nicest rockstar I ever talked at for 45 minutes at Double Door when I was three sheets to the wind.

I can't remember what site I saw it on, but is estranged wife is the one that found him...she was staying at the house, he had some sort of medical procedure and he was recovering with her help...I guess the story is that she went to bring him some coffee and he didn't wake up.

Thanks. I guess it was heart disease. I had heard that he was separated from the wife and wasn't sure if he was upset. I also made the mistake of reading too much into a tweet Billy Idol made sharing condolences and he put #suicide at the end. Never trust Billy Idol.

Too many for me to pick three. Just What I needed is one for sure. Since you been Gone two and a 15 way tie for three.

I always thought Let's Go was a little weird even while being awesome and one of my faves. The line about her being 17 would get shit today maybe? Unless, I missed somewhere he said it was written about his youth.

Well you know you need a quality singer you got to the Polish. Liberace, Bobby Vinton, Benjamin Orzechowski and of course Good Dolphin.

really? i had no problem with "jackson cannery"...in fact i don't think i ever had an issue with how ben folds/five ever started their albums.

plus i think ben's piano skills outweighed his vocals, so starting an album with just him singing may have been a misstep.

The opening riff from Gimme Some Slack deserves a nod as well.

Rock n Roll didn’t !

Jimmy Johnson, the guitarist from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section just died. I was watching an old interview with him and the bass player, David Hood. I didn't know those guys played on a lot of Seger records. They were talking about "Old Time Rock and Roll" and how they originally cut a demo for another guy and while they were laying down the track both of them looked at each other and mouthed, "Bob Seger!"

They tried to record it again with Seger and it didn't go so well. Then Seger tried to record it with the Silver Bullet Band and that sucked too. So they used the original demo.

As they were finishing the track some kid knocked on the door of the studio. The kid's family was on vacation and he made his dad stop at the studio. He asked what it would take for him to be a session player. Jimmy said normally he would have run him right off but he was in a weird mood that day so he told the kid to go get his guitar. He could really play and that's his solo on the record. The guy's name is Howie McDonald.

Wait--what's the implication here? For the record, I am not a Seger fan, though he puts on a great show. "Night Moves" has got to be in my top dozen favorite songs, or close, now as I enter the autumn of my life.

The Cars' lyrics pretty accurately described half my thoughts, concerns, and desires as a teen.

For that alone, I hope Ocasek made it at least into Purgatory. If so, I wonder how many millions of years he'll have to carry huge rocks up rocky mountains against a grey sky to purge the sin from him before he gets assumed into Heaven? I'd be willing to wager $300 that it will be under five million years. PM me if interested.

'I Know Tonight She Comes' is my favorite opening Cars riff. Simple, but it fits the song so perfectly.

I've always loved that song and totally agree. My top 10.
1. Moving In Stereo
2. Let's Go
3. Just What I needed
4. Tonight She comes
5. You're All I've Got Tonight
6. Drive
7. You Might Think (years ago covered this in a ska band....tons of fun).
8. Good times Roll
9. Magic
10. Since You're Gone

CH nailed it.....Just what i needed should have been song #1 on the first album. Such a great way to start.
