Anybody showing up in London for vacation today is, to adapt a phrase, royally fucked. Everything worth a visit will be closed for the next two weeks.

It's ok, Walgreens is still open.

It's called Boots Pharmacy over there....Walgreens owns them now, though.

Yeah I was over there with one of my relatives for a few days in January 2020, and we had talked about the fact that we had both seen all the sights and so we wouldn't be as affected if she died while we were there. We would just fine a pub or three, and hope that one of the branches of Dishoom was open for Indian food.

But you know that some poor fuck saved up for years to take their bucket list trip to London and now they are going to be rewarded with this.

100% yes. Was there for the Bears game in 2019. All the sightseeing, etc that we did in the couple of days before the game didn't scratch the surface. I'd love to go back again to see more. We were also in Dublin and Brussels on that trip.

It wasn't terrible...wasn't the best on that trip, though. Brussels had the best food I had, and Dublin's was really good too.

Ditto and ditto. In addition to London for the Bears we did Prague for the Hawks and then a few days in Dublin. I would not hesitate to return to all three.

Hmmm...Like what? Genuinely curious...I can't think of things I'd really want to see there although when I think about it I'm not really into British history.

My gf got roughed up by Yoko Ono's security in a five pound cover underground east London club called The Garage (iirc); and Boy George bought the Aussie couple we were hanging with their beer, or maybe "lagers", those big ass cans of alcohol everyone drinks over there, after the bartender served George ahead of the couple who were ahead of George in line. Dude George even came over where we were standing to unnecessarily apologize again and "cheers" us all with his drink before disappearing on the dance floor. That was pretty cool.

Britain has a metric fuck-ton of shit they stole from other countries. I think they are more circumspect about putting their pillagings on display nowadays but the British Museum (whatever it's called) is worth a visit. Oh, and during the weekend that we were at a festival in a haunted seaside village (Rye? I seem to recall many annoyingly singing some Beatles song about "ticket to Rye") and got to see Aphex Twin play DDR (which was everywhere over there at the time, even tho British people can't really dance) and do massive amounts of crappy British "speed" (we did the speed, not sure about RDJ, psychedelics probably more Aphex's speed).

Also, you know how some Americans fetishize British accents? Same shit with Brits and American accents. Girls would literally follow us around the club all night just to chat us up (they also might've been stupidly high). My gf noted that if I had traveled there without her I'd have been tits deep in english girls, solely based on having a dumb-ass American accent. But English girls are not an attractive sort. Too much inbreeding. They try hard with the makeup and hair and slutty clothes, but when she ain't got an ass and a picasso face it only goes so far.

Obviously Alaska and Hawaii trump anything on the mainland/lower 48 in terms of must see destinations.

Manhattan, New Orleans and previously SF were must see destinations in the continental US. Maybe <pick your coastal city> FLA, for the beach action. Sarasota-Bradenton area probably first choice in that respect.

If you just wanna be a tourist and do tourist-y things, Chicago tough to beat; maybe Orlando and all the Disney crap, but Chicago's a bit more adult in its tourist attractions. And then DC I suppose for the U.S. history and museums and monuments. Then you're done and can die and go to Champaign, Illinois.

Best analogy I've heard about Britain's Royal Family and why it's worth the money they spend on it is it's their space program; which doesn't necessarily compute until you realize how big the moon shot was for Brits.

Eddie Izzard used to end his stand-up with a extended defense of the moon landing that was more tinfoil hat debunking and history than comedy. Billy Bragg captured the experience of being an 11 year old English lad watching the moon landing. Even drunken Scots get in on the space race worship.

When I worked in the Trib building on Michigan Ave, there was a moon landing exhibit, with supposedly a chunk of the moon in it. Most people paid it no mind. But if on one of my trips to the nearest bar to get my day drink on I'd walk by the exhibit and see people standing by checking it out they had English accents. Usually it was some middle-aged gent and his wife and kids with the dad holding forth excitedly about the moon landing while his kids' eyes glazed over and the wife looked longingly down Michigan Avenue at all the shops.

Heard on the radio this mornin' she was sick.

Then at lunchtime saw she was dead.

She's gotten enough flowers while she's been alive. A quiet death should suffice. No one needs 10 days of mourning.
