Its not a meatball thought, but I dont think a starting pitcher can have a HUGE locker room presence. There's at least 130 games a year that he doesnt even play in.
That's true. I just wonder how much his anger/frustration/rage carries over. Does he come back the next day with a clean slate or does he continue to sulk or still have tension with players/managers.

Let's say he has a bad outing, and has words with Lou. He comes back the next day and the tension is still there. People start whispering to each other: "Is Z starting to crack? Is he going to have a big blow up in his next start? How should I act around him?". The next start happens and even if things go just fine they've basically had a weeks worth of distraction.

That's obviously all speculation as I don't know how it's like but that's how it could carry over even if he's not playing. He's one of the stars on the team and unless you are another star on the team you probably have to be careful about getting on his bad side. He's well paid enough and good enough that even Lou has to be more careful around him.

On the other hand though, when he's doing well I bet he's a really good teammate to be around.

I would be surprised to find that Z is a poison pill in the clubhouse. I've never heard the whispers about him that you heard about Bradley. He's usually cuttin up and hanging with the guys on the days he's not pitching from the very limited shots you get of him.
I don't think it's impossible, but I think it would be surprising.

What about him wanting to give Z less money than he currently makes?

What about it? I simply was responding to Frank who said he didn't recall anyone suggest the Cubs give Z more than $100M. Darkside did.

Yeah, I mean even Barrett didnt rip him that hard.

Usually you can tell who these guys are, because when someone leaves that team, they open up about the jerks.

Havent heard anything like that with Zambrano.

Z doesn't strike me as a guy that would look for a fight like I think Bradley is.

Where was I wrong with how his contract worked out and that at the time, it made sense?

You just don't get it. Contracts usually do make sense "at the time". A 'reward Jordan for past years' performance' contract aside, the only metric that counts is: "Did the contract's value match the ACTUAL performance?" The fact that you argue for measuring a contract's value based on past performance is ignorant.

But again, it's ironic, yet not surprising, to read your on-going name calling and mockery of others in concert with your childlike arguments.

Enough J. You sound like a sausage.
You just don't get it. That's all you have to say.
When Zambrano signed that contract, and when I made the comment I made, those numbers made sense. In fact, they probably still do, last year notwithstanding. He's a number 1 on a premier team, he's going to be getting paid.
I still think that if Z gets his shit together he's worth what he's being paid, based on the going rate for players of his caliber and ability. The year after he signed that contract (5 @ 91 whereas I said 6 @102 which is actually less than what was offered) he was 18-13. Then he was 14 and 6. Whether you're willing to admit it or not, that .581 and .700 winning percentage was woth the 12.4 mil and 16 he was paid those years. Did the contract match his performance? For the first two years yes. Last year not so much, but on year out of all the years he's played doesn't make him over rated.

I dont think even the Yankees would spend that much on a starting rotation. And if they did, they would be better served going for a different pitcher and get more bang for their buck.

Agreed no one can spend that much on every pitcher but, in comparing his contract to Soriano, a guy that wins 67% of the time he takes the mound is much closer to earning his dough than a guy who hits .241 and plays a horrid left-field.

CC Sabathia's team won 65% (22-12) of his starts last year at $15 mil.
Zack Greinke's team won 52% (17-16).
Tim Lincecum's team won 59% (19-13).

Johan Santana 52% (13-12) at $19mil.
Barry Zito 55% (18-15) at $18.5mil.

His performances have not been bad at all. His problem is that the bad ones are really bad and he had a lot of games last year that he went 7 or 8 innings without a decision.

This is bringing back memories of the "Insane Ted Lilly 3 years 30 million contract". "He's a 500 pitcher!!!"

Lots of pitchers are "overpaid" if you break it down.

Yeah young (under 30), durable pitchers are gonna get paid. I think the rub is that he's the 3rd highest paid pitcher in the league. Yikes.

For the record I was dead wrong about Lilly. I thought a flyball pitcher in Wrigley was gonna get shelled. His .500 record was deceptive facing all of those AL East lineups.

I heard Len and Bob mention something about it being the worst opening day loss since the 1884 squad lost 15-3 to New York. Somehow, that club managed to rebound and finish at 62-50, so maybe all hope is not lost

Following today's closely fought battle in Atlanta, the Cubs have dropped into last place in the NL Central. With so much of the season already played, it will be difficult for the Cubs to make a run at the division title. The last teams to reach the playoffs after starting the season this poorly were the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees in 2009.

You have to go back to 2009 to find the last 2 World Series teams who started so poorly and the last WS winner was back when the Yankees were opening up their new Yankee Stadium in 2009.

As you can see, the Cubs now have their work cut out for them.
