I read it was 18 times before they stopped.

He opened his eyes and said "Hey,19" and sailed off.

Put the Steely Dan folder on random ... first one out the gate ... Daddy Don't Live In That NYC No More ... well, I guess not.

Fagen had mentioned Becker had "a procedure and hopefully he'll be very fine soon."

Walter Becker was my friend, my writing partner and my bandmate since we met as students at Bard College in 1967. We started writing nutty little tunes on an upright piano in a small sitting room in the lobby of Ward Manor, a mouldering old mansion on the Hudson River that the college used as a dorm.

We liked a lot of the same things: jazz (from the twenties through the mid-sixties), W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, science fiction, Nabokov, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Berger, and Robert Altman films come to mind. Also soul music and Chicago blues.

Walter had a very rough childhood - I’ll spare you the details. Luckily, he was smart as a whip, an excellent guitarist and a great songwriter. He was cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny. Like a lot of kids from fractured families, he had the knack of creative mimicry, reading people’s hidden psychology and transforming what he saw into bubbly, incisive art. He used to write letters (never meant to be sent) in my wife Libby’s singular voice that made the three of us collapse with laughter.

His habits got the best of him by the end of the seventies, and we lost touch for a while. In the eighties, when I was putting together the NY Rock and Soul Review with Libby, we hooked up again, revived the Steely Dan concept and developed another terrific band.

I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.

I was a late bloomer on Steely Dan, another one of those bands I decided in advance I would never like until I couldn't deny that I was probably destined to be a Steely Dan fan. Along with Neil Young and Bowie, one of the best album runs of the '70s. Saw them at Summerfest a few years back. Sorry to see him go.

Great link, Shirtless. Thanks. Man, they sounded great there. Michael McDonald and Steely Dan is an odd pairing but it worked well.

I didn't read the last linked article but Michael McDonald is on a lot of backing vox for SD. Maybe relationship with skunk also in Doobie Brothers.

Ledger was originally cast to play Becker in the Steely Dan documentary, but after Ledger died, they couldn't find anyone as good, so they 86'ed the whole project.

Well only good news I have seen for a while is the Freddie biopic is back on track and there is a rumor they are going to reboot Magnum P.I. using his daughter.

In an alternate universe, Mike eschewed the Doobies and stayed on with the Dan and they let him sing lead on several songs going forward ... which is a universe I want to live in probably.

The closest I've ever come across such a thing in our reality is Mike fronts a couple of lines in "Pretzel Logic" on this disc ... it's nice.

edit: Just like the rendition on the page linked above ... neato.

I don't get anyone who isn't at some point into The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, and The Steve Miller Band (which you of course outgrow quickly.) You don't have to be into them for a long time -- but at least a month or so.
