Never understood the uproar around this. I cannot be sympathetic to people who need to pay a few cents extra to get their Mr. Pibb.

That's an elitist attitude straight out of the leafy suburban paradise of Northbrook.

You are lucky your sweetened Starbucks drink were not subject to the tax.

Saw a commercial the other day about a grieving mother who "has to drive to Indiana to get their soda." No lady, you don't. If buying soda is that big of a hit on your monthly budget, perhaps it's time to consider alternative beverage options. Like literally anything else.

I stopped drinking soda but I might splurge on some of that fancy orange cream soda to celebrate.

Maybe because it's not something you care about. To make up the shortfall I propose a $10 per hole tax on golf. Play soccer instead if you don't like it.

It didn't help matters at all ... I would suggest made it worse ... that they panicked and tried to pawn it off as some grand "won't someone please think of the children" public health measure. KMA with that nonsense. Just say 'we need more money' and wear it; don't Dusty Baker it and hide behind kids.

I think you're missing the point. Three bucks may be nothing to me or you, but it's a lot to some people. That's the definition of elitism- passing laws for others that have no effect on themselves.

But, the poor didn't pay it either, remember? So, it was a very small subsection of "drinks lots of soda, but can't afford each can to be 12 cents more expensive".

Plus, if the soda tax puts you over the top in "Can't afford it!" then it may be time to look into leaving one of the most areas in the country. I hear Indiana is nice!

People on food stamps didn't pay it and it was easy to avoid by most people I was told!

Why are you such a big fan of the government dictating where people live?

I guess it makes total sense to give everyone $15 an hour and then immediately force them to give back a larger portion of it. Very efficient.

Would a Rick and Ugie tv show be as funny as Rick and Morty?

I think it would.

I used to smoke cigarettes like a fuckin' maniac for over 15 years. When those prices skyrocketed, I quit. Because it's a possible thing to do if you don't want to pay for it.

There are expensive cities, and if $3 a month is making that large of a difference, and you aren't on government assistance and therefore exempt from the tax, it may make sense to look for a cheaper place to live. In terms of what makes Cook County expensive to live in this was an incredibly small portion.

Force them? If you have a soda a day for thirty days that is a difference of $3.60 a month. I'm pretty sure a raise of about $4 an hour would let them absorb that.
