This may not be relevant for most, but the rock guitar playing world lost a pretty amazing tech. His impact is more than most realize and in an almost criminal manner, he never received the recognition.

Frank Levi was a tech who in the 70's and 80's modified Marshall amps for some huge names. He was originally from NYC but eventually found his way to LA. Billy Squier and his first band Piper were the first customers he had. In LA, he worked at place called SIR, which rented out instruments and rehearsal space for many bands. Among his customers were Warren DeMartini of Ratt, George Lynch of Dokken, and Slash from Guns 'n' roses. The guitar tone you hear on Appetite for Destructoion is Franks modified Marshall. All of the other Slash recordings that followed....a Frank Levi modified Marshall. Despite slash using other amps for touring or working with Marshall on s signature amp.....those are not on his recordings. Frank's modified amps were the ones used and they sound amazing. to even pour salt in the would, there was an false "news" article written about Slash's amp where a different tech (Tim Caswell) was listed as the creator of Slash's amp and the AFD guitar tone. It's fiction. it was Frank.

I never met Frank, but there's a pretty decent sized group of dorks like myself that enjoy building tube guitar amps and have tried to replicate that sound. Some even had a chance to talk to Frank. I'm still looking for specifics, but I do know Frank had some issues with booze and cocaine and had cleaned up.....but that's hard mileage. He would have been too young by any category to die.

Rant over....RIP Frank Levi.

. . . And now for a brief anecdote from Joe Orr Road Rod in tribute to this fine, yet obscure toilsman, followed by an acknowledgement by Doug-EP.

I never heard of this guy. Piper did have a couple great songs though.

I actually thought this thread was about Hoffy's mult.
