Sad article. He was one of the reasons I went to IU in Bloomington.

https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/2 ... 359396002/

Maybe Trump is suffering from the same thing that he cannot remember where his father was born?

I guess that he's turning into caller Bob from Bloomington.

Sad.

It's why my dad refuses to retire. He's firmly convinced that it would be a quick trip to dementia and an invitation to a quick dirt nap.

He never had any hobbies unfortunately. Now just biweekly lunches with friends and repeating the same stories to me.

Heard that story many times. Also the ones where they die within a year after retirement. Not an exact science but still ya gotta keep moving in a stimulations activity.

My grandfather worked until the forced retirement age with CPD at age 63. A month later he went to work for the State's Attorney's office and stayed on until he was 80. He died a few months after he finally retired.

Dean Smith and Bobby Knight. The older I get, I realize there are so many ways to go, and all of them suck.

Thank God he didn't retire at age 63 or he'd be dead at age 63.

Listen, it's all bullshit. If you WANT to retire, you'll be fine. If you don't, don't. Obviously, if you feel useless then that's going to affect your health. Same with the old lady croaking. Some guys have been mothered by their wives and can't deal with it. Some guys flourish, go to Vegas and have 20 year twins on their arm.

My dad is the same way except he has some hobbies like fishing, baseball cards and going to White Sox fantasy camp every year (for him that is a multi month process since he starts prepping for it well in advance). He 's 76 and still works up to 6 days per week, although he has cut back on his hours quite a bit. Doesn't get to the office before 9:30 for the most part and usually leaves before 4. He also says the same thing about worrying that his health will go to crap if he stops working.

Even though Knight spent the better part of 60 years of his adult life being an insufferable prick, dementia/Alzheimer's sucks for anyone and their family.

So sad. Great coach. If you sent your kid to play for him you knew what your kid was in for. Coaches were asswipes back in the day when men were men.

I dread the day my sons start saying the same thing about me. Fortunately to this point they keep running into people that are shocked that I've told the stories, and then they expand on them.

Good point, think of how successful someone like John Wooden would have been if he punched his players and called them pussies 100 times an hour.

Without the two hundred dollar handshake banker, one never knows. And I'm not saying he was wrong.

Wooden was not the basketball mind that Knight was. Wooden just had the right person(s) cheating at recruiting for him.

I don’t think there’s a single thing you can point to that would back that up. Yes, Wooden had better players but Wooden also did a lot more than Knight did with those great players.

Both are all time great coaches in any sport and anyone denigrating one to pump the other one up sounds ridiculous, imo.

Anyway, in regard to the first few posts here, I’m not the hardest working or richest fella but I can’t ever imagine retiring fully. Doesn’t seem like an appealing path.

Wooden had two of the arguably greatest players in college history for six title runs. And was just as aided as any coach by friends of the program. Which I don't think Knight was.

Which wouldn't change the fact that I would entrust my young son's development as a man to Coach Wooden. But Knight was a better in game coach. And yes, on the surface that may still appear incongruous to you.

If you don’t think Knight had just as many friends of the program as Wooden helping him I have a 2015 Kenny Williams 3 Year Plan to sell you on.

Who, what, where and when were these people you allege
to be equivalent masters of the two hundred dollar handshake like wooden's banker booster?

I'm plenty cynical about the entire system, but I've honestly never heard stories rising to the UCLA level with Knight. And keep in mind that I don't have a problem with when Wooden or Ray Meyer did it.

Because Wooden was better at it and less people were doing it makes him worse than Knight morally? I expect this nonsense from Rube but cmon RR.
