I'd love to hear Stoney, Hub, Schuster, (Les no) or Mike Murphy discuss Brock. When you look at most career errors by a 1950s + OF Lou Brock leads with 196, extremely shakey defensively Hank Aaron only 117. But, Clemente had 140, Willie Mays 141, Tim Raines an amazing only 54. Base steals success % Willie Mays 77%, Aaron 77%, Brock 75%, Rickey Henderson 81%, Tim Raines 85%.
In the 60s guys were extremely aggresive, and it was a totally different game than today. It was more rough & tumble. Base steals were a huge part of offense. Guys weren't babied, and played through a lot of injuries. Look, we have "sensitive guy" posters praising managers now pulling healthy pitchers after 6 innings with only 83 pitches hurling shutouts.

And Bernstein, the self appointed yardstick of MLB Hof worthiness? When he was young instead of discussing baseball history with his father and uncles, they were probably discussing interest rates, trust funds, and profiting from foreclosures on old widows.

Walks are valuable. But, they only move baserunners over one base. They are not as valuable as a hit like todays metrics pussies say.

And they sometimes don't move a runner over at all.

Walks are more a negative pitcher stat than a positive batter stat. A pitcher has 100% control over whether a batter walks, and while there is skill in taking pitches out of the zone, it still comes down to the pitcher.
