Wasn't 850 one of the OG homes of WCPT back in the day? I seem to have memories of possibly catching bits and pieces of the o'franken factor in 850am back in the day.
and even further back in the day wasn't it 950AM that was the ghetto mono hip hop station?
Yeah, Air America was originally 950, but they brokered the entire station and never paid the bills, so they got run off the air. Al Franken said he wanted to smash the station owner's head in a car door (for not being paid money owed?). Then Air America went to 850 and later 820, which became just "Chicago's Progressive Talk" somewhere along the way and had this completely insane show on weekends where a Highland Park restaurant owner yelled at people. I don't know about ghetto music on 950, but I remember they did have a neat singers/standards format for a little while.
I've made my peace with AM radio dying. I mean, audio fidelity-wise, it sounds like shit. Who will miss that? You can't listen on your phone without streaming, and you can't even listen to baseball that way, the only destination programming left on the dial. It had a good run.
