This is where AM radio is at now: the real estate for the stick is more valuable than the radio station itself.

Being that WAIT is a daytimer, I have a feeling the temporary dormancy will become permanent, as even EMF doesn't gobble up AM daytimers for Christian music. Also, according to that other media board, the tower was hit by lightning during the storms today and knocked off the air, so that's probably how the story ends.

I don't even know which one that is, thankfully.

Wasn't 850 one of the OG homes of WCPT back in the day? I seem to have memories of possibly catching bits and pieces of the o'franken factor in 850am back in the day.

and even further back in the day wasn't it 950AM that was the ghetto mono hip hop station?

Never mind, that's 560 AM.

Yeah, Air America was originally 950, but they brokered the entire station and never paid the bills, so they got run off the air. Al Franken said he wanted to smash the station owner's head in a car door (for not being paid money owed?). Then Air America went to 850 and later 820, which became just "Chicago's Progressive Talk" somewhere along the way and had this completely insane show on weekends where a Highland Park restaurant owner yelled at people. I don't know about ghetto music on 950, but I remember they did have a neat singers/standards format for a little while.

I've made my peace with AM radio dying. I mean, audio fidelity-wise, it sounds like shit. Who will miss that? You can't listen on your phone without streaming, and you can't even listen to baseball that way, the only destination programming left on the dial. It had a good run.

WJPC. The first all Rap station in Chicago (their words, not mine, they did not call it Hip Hop.) Late 80's/ early 90's. I remember a lot of Easy E, Too Short, Whodini, etc.

I can't remember what the format was but I recall as a youth my mother listening to that station for what seemed like all day.

Easy listening, as dead a radio format nowadays as you'll find. But when people did listen to it, they listened all day.
