David Letterman once lamented that, thanks to Ocasek, "goofy-looking guys" now think they can get supermodels.

75? Would not have guessed it.

The Cars were my favorite band in fifth and sixth grade. Very sad.

I cant' believe Brian Wilson is still going strong after peaking 55 years ago.

...and the next to go is sadly going to be Willie Nelson. 86 and cancelling shows. I thought he was still doing that farm aid thing up here this fall though.

I think one of the last 45s I ever bought was "Drive."

(Literally the last 45 I ever bought was "Funky Cold Medina." )

ETA: Actually, it was a 12 inch single.

Elvis.
Bruce Springsteen.
Van Halen.
Steely Dan.

The Cars might fit in there.

The Cars heyday was squarely in my age wheelhouse.

I’m sure he was a nice person. RIP.

No solo artists! That's what makes it tricky for Americans vis-a-vis the British.

Apparently he came up playing in the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the early '60s. Who'dathunkit?

Read an article once where they said it was hard for the Cars because their greatest hits LP was their first/debut LP.

Solid albums throughout, great albums throughout. Door to Door, even though it kinda sucked, had some solid stuff on it. But by then it was over.

Ricky O. would later put his prints all over Weezer's debut album as its producer.

We lived in the city and didn't have cable, but I always liked their videos when I saw them. "Hello Again" always made me laugh.

Your list is missing arguably the best three American bands.

I learned the basics of the drums by playing along to "Just What I Needed" over and over. It was perfect - had to come in at the right moment, basic 8th note rock beat, fun little drum fill and then David Robinson displaced the backbeat to 1&3 and I was like WTF. Tasty drummer.

I'd put the Cars in the "Top 5 Bands That Routinely Employed 2 Lead Vocalists."

The early Cars were the New Wave stepchild of The Velvet Underground.

We talking bands, or do Buddy Holly and Robert Johnson go on that "American" best of list?
