Looked to see if he had a cool nickname, but no: "Mr. Tiger"

I listen to alot of Tigers games, and the radio crew made it sound like Kaline was still active around the team nearly every day. Several interviews during last season he sounded pretty weak. He was a favorite of my Grandpa's; they met several times thanks to a neighbor who had connections.

Seems like every number the Tigers end up retiring turns out to be dead within fifty years.

Absolutely one of the best all around outfielders in the game back then. I remember my dad bought me a Al Kaline outfielders glove when I was ten year old. It had a notch in it which allowed the glove to close easier which was an innovation at the time. I had the glove for years. Kaline had a great arm and excellent speed as an outfielder. Not as good as Clemente but I'd put him next in line defensively in his hey day. I played right field also when I wasn't pitching in high school and I prided myself in being a good outfielder with a very good arm and Clemente and Kaline were my heroes.

I think Colavito might have been a great candidate for being both a pitcher and an outfielder like the Japanese guy who is playing for the Angels now(forget his name) . Rocky had maybe the strongest arm of them all including the pitchers who were around back then.

I remember that world series very well in 1968 between the Tigers and the Cardinals. Kaline had a terrific series as did Lou Brock and both of those teams were great teams. Lolich and Gibson pitched great while McClain pitched a gem in game six to take it to seven games. Denny had as great stuff as ever has been in the major leagues. His stuff was as good as Gibson's in my opinion but Gibson was the best right handed pitcher I have ever seen and McClain was a ding bat. I played against him in high school and with him in Legion Ball. In fact my first cousin played on his Mt. Carmel team.

Yeah, he mopped up some games when they ran out of pitchers. As for Frank, I need no help from Frank about the White Sox.
