Ted Phillips' comments are rich, considering it was McCaskey's handling of the McGinnis fiasco that got Teddy promoted.

I feel for Virginia...it's always sad when a parent outlives their child.

Wasn't it reported somewhere that Papa Bear Halas specifally didn't want Michael running the Bears if he was next in line of all the grand kids.

He wasn't evil, though, was he? Just woefully incompetent and out of his element. I thought the story with him was that he really wanted to be a nature photographer but wound up running a football team.

I remember reading an article about NFL team valuations and the section on the Bears said that Mike McCaskey was very serious about enforcing, like, parliamentary procedure and good decorum at the owners' meetings. That, combined with the part of the article that said the Baltimore Ravens were worth more, said it all to me.

Perhaps I have allowed Royko to help paint this picture

The Bears went to the playoffs 4 times under Michael as the Chairman of the Board (1999-2011). Under George: Once

It may be Royko's all-time best column

I'll just suggest reading the Royko piece.

That column is problematic.

Is this the guy that Spada berated at a Bears game, or was it George?

That was a good column, but I wouldn't call it Royko's best. I'm not sure which one I would, but I wouldn't give it to a gimmicky Bears column.

McCaskey eventually did get a coach in his image in Dick Jauron, didn't he?

sad to hear. wasn't a big fan of his but without the yolk of the Halas klan still owning this team, things will never get better.

He wasn't evil but he was a dilettante owner who never really showed an interest in football but would occasionally insinuate himself into day to day operations. He was football Marie Antoinette. It seemed like there was no way there could be a genetic connection between Halas and Michael

Wanny was on with M & H talking about what a great guy he was. Mentioned his cheapness was only carrying on Bear's tradition. Very awkward. Good radio.
