While he is famous for his exploits at sea, his single most important and impactful decision was one made in a hospital bed at Pearl. I'll always wonder if Midway would've gone sideways without Spruance getting command of Task Force 16. There were a lot of people ahead of him for that command and it was only Halsey's insistence with Nimitz that made it happen.
