I'd say she would be a good candidate for a Sinkex but her hull and bulkheads will be so badly buckled by the heat that it wouldn't even be a good evaluation of the weaponry. She'll just end up going to the breakers after this.

Even though the ship is essentially a loss (hearing the flight deck has now collapsed under the heat) they are still trying to fight it there's almost a million pounds of fuel stored 2 decks below where the fires are burning.

The article said work was to be done by May, but scuttlebutt I heard was that the work had been delayed and she was still undergoing this refit. The purpose of the refit was to extend her life and to give her the facilities needed to support the F-35B.

I'm wondering what the exposure is here for General Dynamics or their insurance company.

because of the work they are doing there would be a ton of flammable oils. You would also have acetylene tanks for the welding job. It's why "hot work" is one of the major risks during a refit.

Who the hell welds with oxy/acetylene anymore? I doubt they even cut anything on that ship with technology being able to fabricate it elsewhere. I would be surprised if there were many flammable items on that shop as well. Someone fucked up bad.

The fire was started in the lower vehicle bay, which on the Wasp class is deep in the bowels of the ship. It's even below the well deck. From what I heard the fact it was a Sunday morning and she was in refit contributed as there were very few crew members aboard. Every single Navy sailor is a trained firefighter (harsh lesson learned from the Forrest Fire) so not having that crew aboard meant there was no one who could go in and put it out before it had quickly spread. You basically had civilian contractors down there who fucked up and then had no training or equipment to deal with it.

After 4 days, the fire is out and you can see why she burned with some of the barrels aboard her.

There's no way this ship is coming back. I don't even think the Franklin or Forrestal burned this badly.
