Could not agree more. I dont mind the ocean liners (well there's only one) because it does fill an actual niche and utility but the cruise ships are something very few people will weep for.

They've been so badly damaged from a marketing standpoint that I don't think a bailout would save them anyway. When multiple headlines refer to you as a "floating petri dish", that's pretty hard to overcome.

They were all owned by the cruise lines anyways and didn't really do anything for local economies.

They don't want to be US flag based because of the Jones Act. Fine, fuck them.

Somebody will buy the better ships and start over. Better yet, blow up the entire industry because cruising is useless.

With enough retrofitting I suppose some may find a new life as ferries but I reckon most of them are going to be broken up. The cost to operate them requires them to achieve load factors that are simply not going to be possible, the boats themselves are worthless.

Been on two cruises and on both the pool got shut down due to a kid shitting in it.

My in-laws have been trying to get us to go on a family cruise for like 2 years now. I like being around them, but I'd rather lick a Covid infested doorknob than go on a cruise.

I kind of understand the river boat cruises in Europe. They are much more floating hotels and not trying to be massive amusement parks. But they are probably all fucked as well, who wants to go to Italy this summer now?

There were never really "Adults Only" cruises, and if you bought a reasonably priced Carnival one it would be full of "rift raft" and their worthless kids. You had to spend a ton of $$$ to find one without the trash and at that point you might as well fly to an island and just do a boat excursion.

I’ve been on four cruises. They have their purpose. Where they have gone wrong of late, and I blame Disney, is with their private island ports. You get off the ship just to visit a beach with Disney restaurants and stores- Castaway Key e.g.

What is nice about cruises is they do dinners really well. You can visit a lot of islands without having to move your clothing and stuff. Then you can go vacation at the places you liked best. Personally, I found the Bahamas and Grand Cayman from cruises and knew I never wanted to go back to Jamaica or Martinique.


All that said, they should not be bailed out.

Our Disney cruise was excellent. Might have been my favorite vacation we've ever taken. I didn't have to do or plan anything. My kids were 5 & 8 or so and the ages were perfect. It was expensive a fuck.

I've heard great things about Alaskan and mediterranean ones.
