74 years old.

Dirt !

One of my favorite guys to imitate pitching as a yute. Loved that guy.

I remember when the Cubs got him.

I thought the Cubs were big time now.

Did not know he was instrumental in the Giants success. Had quite the eye for pitching. Theo could have used him.

There have been a bundle of the cubs acquisitions that I remember feeling so optimistic about that did not pan out the way young (And old squirrel) had thought they would. At least you have your youth to blame for Tidrow love.

He was good as a Cub.

Certainly an upgrade over being excited for Rodney Scott or Miguel Dilone.

He had a great quote about being traded and fitting into the new clubhouse. Trying to find it.

Tidrow was solid.

IIRC, Dilone was pretty good for the Expos for a year or two after leaving.

Not good as a closer at the end which is my memory. His set up years for Sutter and I guess Smith at the end (Accoding to the stats) are much more impressive. I just remember my folks gripping about him when I was a very young lad.

It's also possible my memory equates being a cub pitcher with being BAD in my youth besides a select few stretches.

cubs were the cubs, but they had a goldmine of bullpen talent.

sutter, willie hernandez, bill caudill, lee smith and donnie moore. all on the cubs in 79-80, i believe.

and, dick tidrow.

rip.

I remember the passage in Sparky Lyle's book "The Bronx Zoo" where he discusses Tidrow's unusually competitive spirit playing pepper, diving around getting filthy prior the game earning him the nickname "Dirt". He was a fine pitcher and had some good years with those championship Yankee teams, an underappreciated piece of the puzzle.

1st Yankee I ever liked. Maybe not. Was Gossage before, after, or during the Tidrow era?
