Damn, I was hoping they could get him for one more Super Fans because of the Pope. RIP.

He played a good meathead in “Gung Ho”.

Cheers: underrated, appropriately rated, or overrated? I would lean towards underrated, but it's probably been 25 years since I've seen an episode.

I would say appropriately rated. Isn't it considered to be one of the best sitcoms of its time?

Had great memorable characters. Always good for a few laughs.

It hasn't become part of the lexicon like Seinfeld or The Simpsons. It's one of those shows that's quickly getting lost to time.

I would say that is because it was not as good as those sitcoms. So I would say that is appropriately rated. Still a great show tho.

It had more in common with Friends than Simpsons or Seinfeld: a well-written, character-driven sitcom. But yeah, it's fading away because it kinda burned off its second life in syndication too early and couldn't carry momentum into the streaming era. I know for a while there, channel 9 reran Cheers the way Friends and The Office are now.

Also, it was shot on film, and '80s TV film stock can start to look old. Friends, for being quintessentially '90s, still feels semi-contemporary, and The Office almost 20 years on looks like it could air today. Shelley Long-era Cheers looks old.

Frasier might end up being the more lasting show.

EDIT: 20, not 30; I fat-fingered it on my phone, sorry

that is such an interesting point. Seinfeld chose to film a different way, correct?

Cheers also really isn't relatable. Friends, which mostly sucks, is at least relatable. A show about a bunch of middle aged people sitting around a bar just seems like something that doesn't exist any more. Though, I'm guessing the regulars at Buffalo Wild Wings or Chili's probably can.

Ultimately, when women started to be able to work, I think it killed the dynamic where men could just get drunk at a bar every night.

I think it's easy to overrate it because it is part of that NBC sitcom dynasty with Family Ties, Cosby, Seinfeld, Friends, and Frasier, and the whole story of NBC in the '80s and '90s is one of being hysterically mismanaged but bailed out by a succession of generational talents. Like, no matter what bumbling they were up to in daytime/sports/late-night, there was always some national phenomenon on Thursday night.

Not 100% sure on the cinematography of it, but yeah, Seinfeld, for also being shot on film, never had that dated look to it (I know it's been heavily remastered for streaming).

Newhart is another one that looks like garbage now. If you remember, the first season was shot on videotape, then they moved to film the rest of the way. The rest of those early seasons look like someone's old home movies.

Kirstie Alley was also hot for a while.

There was a rumor, and maybe it was an urban legend, that one of the scripts had Sam telling Rebecca “I’d like to thank your brains out,” but the censors wouldn’t allow it.

I remember watching the show, liking it, and still have a generally good feeling about it and characters but if someone asked favorite episode or moment I don't think I could come up with one. The only 2 lines off the top of my head are Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly and Who are 3 people who've never been in my kitchen?

I prefer Frasier. Maybe Cheers lacks a depth or familial feeling that would make it stick with you. There were no things that drive you to watch it other than it was entertaining for a half hour.

Pluto TV has a Cheers/Frasier channel. Cheers is still hilarious.

It had peaks and valleys, especially at the end of the Diane era. By the time it was ending it had been worn out for a while.

Yes. I'm not a middle aged guy hanging out at bars most nights. You got me.

Rebecca did nothing for the show (other than ruin it). Awful character.
