I'm pretty sure I have his Topps rookie card. I'm willing to sell it to you for only $20.

I watched that entire game by myself in the TV lounge at my dorm the first week I was at UofI as a Freshman.

I'll never forget it. That was a treat. Thanks.

Sad to hear about Dwight though. Didn't he also sing the National Anthem a few times?

Very sorry to read this. I know it sounds crazy considering they won the World Series in 2016 but that 1989 season was the most fun I ever had as a Cubs fan and Dwight smith and Jerome Walton were a big part of it. That was my favorite Cubs team ever.

I thought he negotiated into one of his contracts? Might have been some other player.

Smith probably should have won the ROY that year over Walton.

The stolen base and leadoff hitter were over-valued in that era. Smith had a monster season. He got dinged because he didn't come up until May.

I remember being so sure he was gonna be a star the way he hit that rookie year. Turns out he had career highs in just about every category that year and never came close to being a star. But what a great run he had down the stretch in ‘89, I will never forget the excitement in the park that year, back when I went to games and it was $7 to get in the bleachers.

rip. thought he was a good hitter. great low ball hitter, like most lefties. just never developed the power you'd hope. was hoping he'd turn into a mel hall type - the hitter, not sexual predator. just not enough power from smith.

Seems like he's in the category of "for a bad baseball player, he's good." They'll do clutch things, have one great year, but 95% of time, they're just kinda bad.

Man, I thought the cubs might of had something with those two when I was a kid. I was relentlessly optimistic at that point and the Ty Griffen, Earl Cunningham, Lance Dickson experience hadn't crushed my prospect spirit yet. And to think it only got worse. Well, hard to be worse than Ty and Earl.

i wouldn't say he has was bad - he had the benefit of usually hitting in front of grace. just didn't hit for power. LF and 1B couldn't combine for 20 HRs a year. grace gets a pass because he hit well over .300 every year, smith was a .275 hitter with 8-9 HRs a year. he did have a fantastic rookie year, just didn't do the sandberg and start hitting line drives for HRs.

i thought mitch webster was a decent MLBer, i thought smith was better.

Harry's call was more exciting for a regular season walk off win than Hughes' was for the fucking World Series last out.
