My first in person Bulls game featured a battle of Artis Gilmore and a still in his prime Walton. At the time it was the largest crowd ever at the old stadium. IIRC, Artis stole an inbounds pass near halfcourt at the end of the game and proceeded in for what would have been a game winning dunk...except he failed to dribble and was called for traveling.

Dang, very sad.

Had it been shared that he had cancer?

A legend on the court and with the Mic

This sucks.

His playing career was pretty much over before my time, but he was a legend on the mic. The 3 man booth with Steve Snapper Jones and Bill Walton and whoever was doing the play-by-play was a favorite of mine dating back to the NBA on NBC days. Walton could turn a 30 point blowout and still keep it interesting and keep you tuned in till the final buzzer.

I've been blessed to hear some of the greatest call games locally and nationally, but Walton is probably at the top of my list. Douchebag's post helped make that clear for me. Locally and nationally, I knew who the partner(s) were for all of my favorite guys. I wouldn't have been able to pick Walton's partners out of a lineup. The guy was a must listen for me. I think the Sox played the Angels when he called the game with Benetti. Either way, Walton made a guy I didn't like enjoyable. I would have listened to Walton describe paint drying. Harry Caray is the only guy who comes close, and he's a distant second.

You can get cancer from lying face down now?

Biden really has screwed this country up!

Throw It Down Big Man. Throw It Down!. Bill Walton was one of a kind. Both as a player and an announcer. I was too young to have seen him when he was really good, but the glimpses of him while he played with the Celtics were still pretty good. His old highlights with Portland were great too.

I had no idea he stuttered. Makes his broadcast career even better.

Too bad Portland wasn't on tv. I would have been too young to appreciate him, anyway. The paper today said he was in the "NBA Hall of Fame," but isn't it just the basketball HoF? His career pro stats were not good (obviously due to injury).

The dads in my neighborhood didn't know what to think about Walton. One one hand, Walton was a hippie who played out West in college. On the other hand, he was White and played (at the end) with the Celtics.

Hard to believe they were 2 of the most dominant centers in league history...proving once again that age remains undefeated.

I hated him circa 2000, but when you stopped taking him seriously and just took him at his own level, you learned to appreciate him.

Describe his bit. A mocking of overhype by 'overhype magnificence'? However it's described, he was brutal on that White Sox game with Benetti whipping him like a jockey and I never really looked at him the same after that.

He would over praise good but not great players and deride players who were decent, but might make a bad play here in there. I want to say he called one of the Arizona players who played against U of I in the NCAA Tournament in the early 00's, "flawlessly sculpted." Once I realized that you were supposed to laugh at him, and he was looking to entertain more than just push buttons, he became a lot easier to stomach.

He would use humor to describe things that were true. It took the sting away from the commentary, IMO. From the description of a Shaq shot to a bone headed play someone made. He perfectly blended traditional analysis, sophomoric humor, and story telling.

I thought his schtick got tired very quickly, kind of like Phil Jackson.

Walton was great when he was being his quirky self. Walton wasn't great when he was being the character based on his quirky self.

He's a lot like Bill Murray in that way.
