Today's Greenstein article in the Tribune talks about the return of Pat Foley to the Blackhawks. But it also makes mention of Mike North's potential final days at 670 "THE SCORE."

North going south
WSCR-AM 670 is ready to shut the door on Mike North and his crass, low-rated morning show. North's contract expires July 1—is he also ready to walk away?

Industry sources say North has met with officials from WLS-AM 890, which might part ways with its morning tandem of Don Wade and Roma, whose contracts are said to be up in November. Last week North was spotted in the ABC Building, which is home to WLS, WMVP-AM 1000 and WZZN-FM 94.7, an oldies station.

North continues to find humor in outdated, sexist material. He recently voiced his displeasure for a female ESPN reporter with a crude sexual innuendo, suggesting she had slept her way into prime assignments.

Sources say WSCR has offered North no more than a two-year contract, in part so the station can make a run at WMVP-AM 1000 afternoon host Dan McNeil when McNeil's contract expires in May 2010.

So if North returns to WSCR after peddling himself around town, it will reflect an overall rejection by the Chicago market.

A ChicagoTribune.com poll last week revealed 7 in 10 want WSCR to dump North.

His most likely replacements would be Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley, who analysts believe would earn higher ratings than North while requiring far less than the $800,000 or so the Score is believed to be offering.

Mike North is NOT going to WLS, let alone replacing Don and Roma.

And North is now having Mitch on the air with him to defend his ratings.

Mitch, had Fred disease, Mhmm Mhhmm Yes, Mmhhmm

North has determined that his show is in 5th overall, based on 25-54 age group, of big companies

Claims Rod Zimmerman said he wants Mike to stay as morning guy, however Zimmerman asked Mike to get another offer.

Mike claims he has 5 year deal at the Score offered.

And it is all about Teddy getting his facts wrong. According to North.

Poor Mitch is caught in the middle

And he's been offered three better deals than the Score put on the table.

North at 'LS?

I got the feeling it was a sign of solidarity from the score management and North. I can hardly fathom another 4 to 5 years of this bumbling buffoon. And if you catch the 12-2 goof, you will hear a lot of North love from Murph lately.

Let me declare (stealing Murph's line) I listen to North on my 30 minute commute if M&M are talking about something I don't really care about, today it was Peter Gammons and the pile of hot steaming sheet they were shoveling that made me reach over to the dial and tune in.

Mike will have to call Ted Cox when he gets home to get another werid online column saying the score is offering him a 10 year 100 mill contract, which he turned down of course.

Having Mitch on is stupid, like he is going to say anything. I just get the feeling Mitch wants everyone to like him and being the boss, that isnt a good thing.

Mike is losing it because he use have control over what was put in the paper, now he doesnt, that bugs him, you can hear it in his voice. Not to say I have peeps, but the one or two people I know over there, said the two year deal is accurate and it wont include mornings, they already have a plan which doesnt include pappy.

I've been around a while and I've seen radio/TV personalities come and go and I've seen feuds between them and I've seen negotiations played out in the papers, but North's behavior in this matter is about as childish as I've ever seen. Now he's reading anti-Greenstein e-mails from his "supporters" and making all sorts of vague threats against him. ("I don't forget, I get even.") What's he gonna do? Have some of his Mafia-wannabe friends break Teddy's legs or something?

He's like the Cedric Benson of sports talk radio.

He got his big money, quit working at his craft and basically retired.

Mike is the only person I've ever heard who's happy to be in a losing position.

Clearly, Mike puts some stock in what web polls say. Lord knows he uses them on a daily basis to substantiate his opinions on things. Yet, when confronted with data from the Trib web poll he's proud of the "30% Keep Him" stat. "We have loyal listeners!" Mike yells. Yes, Mike...every show probably has loyal listeners; even the worst of the worst. A station will always have its P1's. BUT...if fewer and fewer people are listening to your show, what good does it do the advertisers (even if they are YOUR GUYS) who spend big bucks to advertise on The Score?

Admittedly, the current Arbitron rating system isn't perfect. I'm sure than when the PPM's are rolled out there'll be a few kinks. That system may turn out not to be perfect either. But like it or not, the current rating system is all that advertisers have to gauge the value of a station and of the dayparts on that station. Call me crazy, but charging a new advertiser big bucks to advertise on an underperforming show sounds a bit kooky. If I've got money to spend and I want to buy The Score, I'm looking for the biggest bang for my buck. Like him or not, Murph brings it in. Mully and Hanley bring it in. Hell, with the Sox doing so well I'd even look into buying time during those broadcasts.

Mike has consistently had his pants pulled down by a nationally syndicated AM show. The court of public opinion doesn't seem to hold him in very high regard. Now, he's trying to use the short end of a Tribune webpoll and the "inaccurate" facts written by a newspaper columnist to position himself as a winner. The "spin control" this AM was priceless.

Anyone else waiting to hear Mike say most Sports Radio listeners have been "banned" from his show since he went to mornings? It must be the reason for the ratings. I "banned" myself about four minutes into the first show of this suckfest.

Mike North taking over morning drive at 890 WLS or 94.7 "True Oldies"? Fat chance! They just replaced the morning man at "True Oldies" with Brant Miller, the same Brant who does the weather at NBC 5, but dabbled in radio back in the day. As for WLS, the word I'm getting from there is that they may go syndicated in morning drive with controversial New York-based "shock jock" Don Imus once Don Wade & Roma's deal expires. North can go back to selling Vienna hot dogs like he used to... As far as "Mully & Hanley" go, keep them where they are at now, and give Laurence Holmes, Matt Abbatacola & Brian "the Whipping Boy" Paruch the coveted morning drive slot instead!

Who are these analysts? Us?

Seriously, there may be radio analysts covering the industry from some investement firm but I doubt that they would be more qualified than the CSFMB to analyze the realtive competitive strength of a sports radio show. So, who are these analysts if they aren't us or Greenstein himself? It's not Feder or Cox and anyone who works for a station would be an insider and not a third-party analyst.

So, which one of you is doing industry coverage for Greenstein? And is bigfan getting his cut?

Pappy is going to have a nervous breakdown, I dont see anyway around it. If I was Teddy G, I would focus all my articles on North till he is gone, because North just cant handle it and its great to listen to.

By the way, Pappy said he had 6 stations after him, since he said that he would never work for am1000, WZZN just isnt a option and WLS has been laying off, so they wont pay North's demands, were are these 6 stations? North has just ruined his chance of even getting a decnet offer.

Pappy has soiled himself on this one.

You are correct about 890 WLS & 94.7 "True Oldies". Their parent company, Citadel Broadcasting, made massive layoffs shortly after the former ABC Radio had a miserable third quarter. Some thought the layoffs were an overreaction by Citadel, but the fact of the matter was that 15 staffers at the two stations were laid off last February, and others got pink slipped at Citadel stations elsewhere. If North leaves 670 "The SCORE", those are two stations he won't go. You can also forget about "Pappy" joining ESPN Radio 1000, too. North has as much chance of joining the "Eastern Seaboard Programming Network" as the Kansas City Royals have of winning the World Series...NO CHANCE!

How do you defend a 2.2 rating in your target audience? That must mean he has a less than 1 overall ratings number. the show sucks and the numbers prove it. Mitch knows it, the industry knows it, only Mike doesn't know it.

Simple logic. With North in the Mornings, they have SIX hosts between 6am and 6pm. Take out North, put Mulley and handley on in the morning, extend Murph to four hours, and B+B stay where they are. No North to pay. Addition by subtraction. Less money paid for better overall programming. Better ratings = Better revenue from advetisers.

Its definitely not brain surgery.
