Here's the thing though.....

My Grandma knows who Mike North is.
My friends who don't really listen to sports radio know who Mike North is.
My Mom knows who Mike North is.

They don't know who Mike Murphy, Brian Hanley, Dan Bernstein or Drinky are.

They call it Q rating or something like that and Mike North has that in spades.

Mike North is easily, easily, easily the most recognizable name on the Score. He's the star. Mully and Hanley? Yes, I like the show all right, but it is dull and likely won't make any kind of splash on the radio or sports scene. We all know this. Many here hate North and would prefer anything ... they just wanted him gone... but there isn't anyone there that can take his place. What replacements are there? Most here don't want LoHo on in the middays. Whipping Boy has been on the radio for years here in Chi. There is a reason he's never stuck anywhere. Drinky? Goff? I like those guys, but they just don't grab you.

I'm all for North changing his show up, since I agree what he was doing in the morning wasn't working. And maybe his ego won't allow it at this stage. And that's a shame. Since the reason I'm still a fan of the Score has a lot to do with the original gang. The Monsters. The Heavy Fuel Crew. A young Bernstein, before he became a prick.

The current lineup? Man, I don't know. The Score seems adrift without Pappy. What is the Score without Pappy? The place where Mully and Hanley provide a nice easy listen? The arrogance of LoHo? The tired act of B&B?

That's not what made the Score great. The score was brash, abrasive, uncouth and in your face. Now to sign a contract there you can't criticize the management. The times have certainly changed.

And not for the better.

Knowing who he is and actually listening to him... two different things.

They, and a lot of other people know who he is, too. But apparently, none of them were listening.

They probably also know who Jeffrey Dahmer is too.

Is this the K4E from Real GM?

Mike North is a blow hard windbag.

The Score was the first all sports radio format / program to hit the chicago airwaves...and it is a staple with many sports fans. I listen because I am a sports fan...and it is my "go to" station. North was a part of the success...but the format is SPORTS...and the sports fans (aka - consumers) are who the Score is & what will allow the Score to be successful.

North is so full of himself and thinks he is bigger than the station. Go the fuck away and let the sports consumer....consume sports...and let the fucking windbag, blow hard.." iam the score"..."I made the score" piece of shit wallow in his own makings.

Just my opinion.

Go to your work and be critical of your boss for a week striaght and let me know how it goes. The whole "how times have changed" is not accurate, because Mike is the only to go after Managment, I dont think I ever heard anyone else do it on the score and I have been listening since day one.

By the way, how do we know Mike is telling the truth, I think there is a very good chance the guy is lying.

Mac did it. He's gone.
I heard Hood did it. He's gone.
Swieca did it. She's gone.
North did it. He's gone.

Those are just the ones I know about or can remember off the top of my head.

Didn't the Score guys used to pile on Gleason all the time?

Didn't Danny Mac always get suspended for such antics?

You're right. I can't criticize my boss at work. Of course, I sit in a freaking cube all day. Its not a lot of fun.

The Score was fun. It was a gang of irreverent guys that didn't really belong at the press conference (one of Pappy's greatest moments, IMO). They *would* fire away on the boss. That was part of the image and the fun. Who wants to have a corporate culture when listening to Sports radio? I don’t.

Now what do you have?

Mully and Hanley will kowtow to anyone since their jobs at the Sun Times are dying and they need a gig. LoHo is a prick and not 1/10 as smart as he thinks he is. Listening to that jackass every day is a fate worse than death. B&B used to be good. Not anymore. Do you really think whipping boy, drinky, goff, ginger haired genius are going to somehow evolve into interesting characters? Maybe... I'm all for giving them a shot, but have not heard it yet.

The reason 670 is on my presets has more and more to do with the past than the present.

Now... I 100% agree that the MNMS needed fixing. And maybe the ego/money made Pappy too far gone to repair. Perhaps that is the case.

Its just kind of sad, IMO, since I used to really like the Score and Pappy leaving is certainly the end of an era. Now, the Score lacks any identity and seems like it will be adrift. Its hard to see who is going to step up and make the Score great again.

I think I lost my point somewhere...lol

Yes Mac did it, but he left, Sweica did it, but she left, Hood also left, not fired. So its easy to beat up the suits when you know one foot is out the door. My point is that North would rip those guys, but he did it to deflect the fact that his "radio creation" failed.

Yea, they would take little jabs at Goose Gleason, but I dont think it was ever that serious.

If everybdy knows who Mike North is and he has such a great "Q" rating, why was he in 8th place? Why didn he always lose to Mike and Mike?

North was a moron, but somebody brought in Annie and tried the "talk show" format which was so moronic...they needed to pair North with someone he'd have to treat as an equal and score management failed at that. Mike and Mike works partly because neither ever completely has the upper hand, and they don't take themselves all that seriously...too bad the score didn't hang on to Greenie

So, would you also say that Scott Peterson is (was) the police community of Illinois? Everyone knows who he is, but he is not very popular and failed at his job.

I don't know what the big deal is anyway, North will be back...first he'll do a minute or two on the phone with Murph...then he'll do a show for a day...then he'll be back doing nights or something, and the Score will get more pub...

but for FAR less money than he turned down. What a fool. He'll be begging for work to feed his huge ego, but his star days are long over. I find it really, really funny!!!!!!

No.

1.) I know the level of hate for Pappy is high, but I would not compare him to a suspected murderer.

2.) Pappy was at one time not awful. He is one of the main lynchpins behind the growth of the radio station that this message board is named after, and certainly its most recognizable personality. I don't think Scott Peterson was ever was a vital member of the police community... he's pretty much just known for probably killing people.

Fair enough. The Morning Show was not good and if he wasn't going to change it something had to be done. 8th in his demo does not dictate superstar wages, no doubt, but its hardly an abject failure. Now the Score is filled with personalities that the average person has never heard of and your non-message-board-dweller does not care one way or the other about.

If you have millions in the bank already its probably worth 500K a year to not have to work for people you don't want to work for. Declining marginal utility of wealth / wages.

The ego thing is another point. He'll get airtime somewhere, but perhaps not 50000watt morning drive, its true.

The funny thing is that people think North is a moron. Sure, he ran a hot dog stand and didn't go to college, but I don't think the average hot dog stand owner could have the run that North did. Sure, he was lucky to get the original break, but you can't dispute that he ran with it and maximized the opportunity. A true idiot would have fucked the whole situation up. North worked hard and became a millionaire.

North will be back on the air somewhere, IMO, if he chooses, and people will care more about that than whatever holmes or hanley or drinky will ever have to say.

Score was a cult listen that crossed into mainstream with Pappy getting his big contract, doing TV gigs, White Sox, etc. I'd like to see it fade into Bolivia and new talent that delivers sports and entertainment develop. I could care less if your or your neighbors grams recognize their names.

Your point was that Mike North is known by a lot of people and therefore he was valuable because of that. I only brought up *Drew* Peterson because he is the most famous cop in all of Illinois. The most well known is not always the best. Tom Waddle would have the highest Q rating of anyone at WMVP, including Dan McNeil. It doesn't mean that Tom Waddle is *WMVP*.

It was bad radio for four hours a day. The show wasn't fun to listen to. CBS management knew that they had to take control of the show. They tried, and Mike North told them to go to hell. That's his right, but it was also the right decision. I don't know what percentage of the listening audience is like me, but I actually like Mike North, but I didn't like his show. He had way too much power on his show, and hopefully at his next stop he's not the one calling the shots.

I agree that he is quite an asset, but given his current opinion of what he can do, he was a tainted asset. He could be a great host. He's not good at running a show.

I chose to listen to a sports show out of Washington, DC that was syndicated nationally over the local coverage of Mike North. That says something wasn't right and the SCORE was right in making demands and then holding firm on them.

Edit: Thanks for the help Coach.

The usually accurate Rick is off his game today by calling Peterson Scott (it's Drew) and associating Waddle with Score.

Guilty as charged. My brain has checked out for the weekend already.

It's funny, pre/early-MNMS my radios were all set to the Score and had been since the '93-94. Now, I generally chose to listen to politcal/general talk on the radio, listening to sportstalk really only between 2-7 pm, and actually watching ESPN again (I'd largely stopped over the last two years). That guy poisoned the well for me.

----I couldn't think of Drew Peterson's name either....and thankfully, I didn't even care

IMO Pappy has a solid future pimping sh* in TV commercials a la that by-cracky Willy Hayes guy who sells laundry detergent-cleaner like stuff or that Irish-accented Anthony Sullivan dude. He can actually do a cross between the two, grow a by-cracky and do an Irish accent. He could also dress like a bishop and hold a pimp cup.

I agree with Kukoc 100% except Bernstein was a prick coming out of his mother's womb. The SCORE has not changed him.

The SCORE is infinitely better without that windbag/douchebag North. Period, end of story.

For you guys crying over his demise you should point your anger at him. He committed career suicide through his stupidity. That is the only thing I would ever thank him for. Sayonara chump.   :drunken:

TEK, Funny how you signed up on June 26 and have 4 comments saying North was the Score. More importantly it is pretty obvious that Mike North is TEK. Move on chumpo, your time is done.
