One for the Graveyard--literally. "Chicago Eddie" Scwartz has died at age 62 in a Waukegan nursing home.

Yeah, he had a lame WGN show (wait, that's redundant) and was grossly overweight. As I think we've discussed here before, Kevin Mathews' impression of him was hysterical.

Former Chicago radio personality Kevin Matthews & one of his former Program Directors, Mitch Rosen, are as saddened as anyone in the wake of Eddie Schwartz's death this morning. Near the end of his 10a "Scoreboard Update" this morning, Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch acknowledged that 670 "The SCORE" recently helped out in a "Good Neighbor Food Drive", a food drive near & dear to Eddie's heart, as did CBS Radio's sister station WBBM Newsradio 780.

OK...that is right. I spent some time as a Kev Head prior to sports radio coming along. His impression is what i was thinking of.

A nursing home at 62?

Eddie's health was declining for years and this unfortunately was the best place for him to get proper care. As I have said elsewhere, I got to do the 1am Sports with Eddie on the Loop-AM just before that Station's ill-fated switch to WMVP.Indeed Mitch Rosen produced Eddie's program. Eddie was fun and the food drive proves how big a heart the man had. From Oct 1992 when Eddie moved to AM-1000 from WGN until March 1993 is when I worked on his show while I also was doing a mid day program on AM-1000. When Bruce Wolfe left the Steve and Garry show in March 1993,I moved to do morning drive Sports for the final 8 months Steve and Garry were together. Then Steve did a solo show on WMVP in morning drive(which he hated doing),and Eddie's health got worse and he left the station. In August 1994 was when I started doing overnights on 1000(almost 3 years before I joined the Score)and Eddie would occasionally call in just for the heck of it.
Once again, this was a very nice guy who cared more about others than he ever did about himself.

Eddie was a great guy Grobber. TY for sharing this story; and I know he got the VIP entrance treatment when he got to the Pearly Gates. RIP Eddie, you were a fun listen back in the day.

Eddie was the epitomy of local overnight radio in Chicago. Even though I rarely listened he had a huge following that I dont think gets properly accounted for in the "flawed ratings" and the same for Grobber overnight. Never got the credit deserved.

Was it Eddie that had the police scanner going during his show?

Now, as much as i might rip bad radio (pappy), eddie was a one of a kind, true, classy and good spirited person. I was in my early 20's when he was on overnites and his show, while corny, I had to tune it in. He would have macho man savage, hogan, tito santana and other wrestlers on from time to time. Had a the pleasure of meeting the guy a few times and what grobber said is true, he cared more about others then himself, he gets a A+ in my book, he will be missed.

Yes, he was the guy with the police scanner and I dont know if it was mentioned, but he is the reason the good will food drive exists, he pretty much started that and from what i understand, he did all the leg work on that when it was first started, making the calls, meeting with food banks and all that, like I said, a true class guy.

Catching his show at the oddest hours was always...different, but welcome. A radio guy who listened, thought, and then talked...what a commodity.

i knew him from kev's impersonation of him before i ever listened to him, but he was a good overnight host. the kind of local chicago show that does not really exist anymore.

i remember one show he called the guy manning the bridge controls on the chicago river in his booth and talked to him for an hour. LOL.

I was just a kid listening to ed late nights. I think many of us did since steve and gary use to make fun of him which drew more listeners to his show.

I remember he had a bad weight problem all his life and remember one night he was really depressed talking about how he saw one of his old girlfriends with some other man.

I think he jumped to am1000 cause he probably felt too young for WGN at that time. Eddie's Halloween specials use to be good as a kid to listen to, and can't forget those crazy interviews he had with folk like Bill Bixby and the Elvis Lives 80s show, remember that?

I also remember as kids we use to make fun of his producer all the time, call in and prank the shit out of him. Schwartz use to say that some guy use to always call saying 'WOO WOO' and hang up. So i remember bunch of us always use to do taht to Rosen. Now Can't believe that pee on is now a big wig in chicago radio. I guess he paid his dues and should credit Eddie for giving him a start.

Now I got that fucking CHICAGO ED song stuck in my head...........

If you told me Ed Schwartz would outlive Norm Van Lier, I'd laugh in your face.

Then again, Norm's quality of life the past 20 years was much much better than Chicago Ed's.
