You have upset a Mike North Morning Show fan and here is the Email he sent me:

What's your problem with Mike North and his crew? Why do you all hate him so much, I don';t see any reason why everything you have to write is totally negative?" Why don't you find something better to do than hate on a guy that doe as good job? You think you could do a better job?

I love breaking these down-

1. My problem and I only speak for myself is that the show is terribly lame. Nothing is funny and the sports content is generally lacking except when Mike delivers his unfounded opinons of teams and games he didn't watch, because he had a thing.
2. I don't hate Mike- just hate the show- Mike needs to be teamed with someone that will stand up to him, instead of YES MIKE.
3. Do something psoitive and I am sure the fans will write all day about it. Maybe do a national recall on the 8 CD's he sold. Now thats a positive.
4. I have found soemthing better to do, Johnny B, 97.9 -6 Am to 10 AM.
5. Yes, I think I could do a MUCH better job. I am sure Mike would laugh at that statement, but I dont think the expertise of working at the hot dog stand honed the talents that are unapproachable.

SUGGESTIONS

1. Anne, gotta go. My final days of listening ended with her comments on sports topics and some other crap that nobody cared about. She belongs at the local starbucks with my sister discussing day care and shit.

2. Fred, only does updates.

3. Need anotehr Number 1 guy- someone like a Dave Baum, someone that can go at it with North and call him out.

4. Buchman, gone! ROCK moves into the number 1 slot. The predictable morning publicist lists was at an all time high when I listened to North. I underatnd they are playing the "You gotta have this WB star on if you wanna have FAbio" but thats what makes Kathy and Donny or whatever they are lame and thats why Johnny B would rather have Don Gorski on the air over some guy pushing his book.

5. Guy on the street. Not Jen on the steet, Someone truly funny needs to become part of the show.

Here's what I want to know: why has North lasted so long?

I am far from being a fan of Pappy and all of his crappy, and it seems like he has VERY few supporters on this board, yet he's the freakin' Energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going. His support staff sucks, jesus, his grammar sucks, and last I checked you have to have good speaking ability to work in radio.

I scratch my head about this constantly and never can get any answers that satisfy, so why not ask the passionate sports radio people their opinion?

I know when he signed his deal, he threatened to pull all of his sponsors, but he must have been negociating with a spider monkey to win that argument. Plus, you would think that by now WSCR management would realize he's a financial black hole. Will he be prepared for a huge paycut when this deal is up? Is there another station in this market for him to go to? Is there someone dumb enough to try and syndicate him?

What the fuck does this guy have that allows him ironclad job security? He's said so much stuff that should have gotten him fired, yet he keeps on tickin'.

So, answer this question for me.....why?

One other thing, in person, Jen is pretty hot. I can see why she got her "personal assistant" title, and how she keeps it, if ya know what I mean. In a similar vein, what kind of station allows a guy's personal assistant to get a producer title?

Good points, Big Fan. My sentiments nearly point for point.

Hummer: Like it or not, who do all the sponsors seem to line up for? I know very little of the sports radio industry, but I imagine there are much higher interests at the corporate level than the "quality" between 6 and 10 a.m. Someday, when I no longer tune in to the Score, my lasting memory may unfortunately be one big, generic blob of North using his Super Fan caricature during a never-ending string of live and taped reads.

I keep on hearing people say "Oh Mike will pull his sponsors". That statement has always confused me. Don't sponsor's want to advertise with people who actually have listeners.

Get someone with better ratings and believe me you will keep North's old sponsors or you will get new one's

I don't think its the sponsor theory. I think its the fact that they are stuck with North's contract. Think about it. How many people-in the history of radio- can fail at afternoon drive (like Pappy did getting killed by MJH every book) and get rewarded with a chance to do mourning drive. That is unheard of.

Everytime North knows he is failing he just bounces some where else. That is why he wanted the Sox job. Because he knows he is failing here and can't recover.

I would wager that much like North tries to appease the lowest common denominator on the air, he can find a way to appeal to HIS GUYS. "Ratins'? Dem numbers are screwed, buddy, you can wely on dem numbers. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin." I'm sure he can apply the charm when needed.

100% agreed.

I had heard from a reliable source that he got the contract because of the threat of him taking the sponsors elsewhere. That's got to be the case study on bad negociating, or good negociating if you're North.

When the head hits the pillow tonight, we should all be glad that he didn't get the Sox gig!

Big Fan,

how are you sure he wrote that email?

Here is what I don't understand. How did North have the pull to break up the original Score. True, the North/Jigs was OK. But it was a midday show and I don't recall that show doing blockbuster ratings numbers.

Then Pappy gets his solo show. This show sucked but that is where Pappy got his million dollar deal. Once again this was a midday show so Pappy got a million dollars and had never proven him self in a Drive time slot. Plus he never really displayed a dominance in his midday shows.

This image of a radio God is one that Pappy likes to spread. But what has he ever really done other then scam a contract.

He goes to afternoon's and fails badly. Now he is in mournings and had 3 lousy books. Plus even with this last book that he brags about, he is basically tied with Mike and Mike.

The guy has been medicore at best in his career. Yet for a guy with such small success he comes out with his own web site, t shirts, food products, comes out with a CD. All of witch no one has bought I am sure.

He is a legend in his own mind.

The problem is so-called managers like Drew Hays who never stood up to him. (ba-dum-dum!)

Bigfan, you're on the right track, but I gotta disagree with you on 2 points...

IMO, Johnny B has evolved even less over the years than Murph. I was a huge fan back in his hey-day, but now I feel almost uncomfortable listening to him attempting to relive that era.

As for Baum - I like him in short bursts on the weekend, but he would not be a good foil for North. The only current on-air guy that I think would stand up to Pappy's rants would be Bernstein (not that I'm suggesting it, but it would be interesting).

Stick to sports and take more callers would be my suggestions. That way - even without a strong co-host - he would have to defend his positions.
