Bears defensive end Gaines Adams dead at 26

Gaines Adams, the defensive end the Bear acquired for a second-round draft pick from Tampa Bay this season, died this morning at 26.

Adams, according to reports in The Greenville News, was pronounced dead at the emergency room of Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, S.C. according to County Coroner James T. Coursey.

Adams, 26, was a standout player at Clemson at defensive end, and was the fourth player chosen in the 2007 National Football League draft by the Buccaneers. He was traded from Tampa Bay to the Chicago Bears in October, though didn't find much playing time with the struggling defensive unit.

An autopsy is planned by Anderson County officials following reports of a heart attack, though no cause of death has been declared yet.

In four years in the league, Adams, a native of South Carolina, recorded 13.5 sacks in 29 games.

The tragic news comes less than 24 hours after fellow Bears defensive lineman Dusty Dvoracek was arrested in relation to a bar brawl in Oklahoma.

While I will certainly lament the loss of life-particularly as he had a 6 year old son, I will not act like a St Louis Cardinal fan and pretend it's a personal crisis. I never knew the guy and his play on the football field was so poor that I never gained any affinity for him as an athlete either. I regret that Jerry Angelo traded away a 2nd round pick for the guy and wonder what Tampa might have known (if anything) about this enlarged heart he apparently had. Further, I hope the money this makes available, is put to use on someone who actually contributes to the team.

just curious, Is the NFL going to do any tribute for him. I only ask because they did something for Chris Henry.

The Bears are flying a charter to go out for the funeral in SC. But there has been no indication that I have heard of, to pay tribute to Adams, by the NFL. Quite frankly, he had accomplished so little as a player, that it would seem silly to pay tribute to him. They didn't for Fred Washington that I remember. They will probably mention him (that he died) during the broadcasts on Sunday, but I don't expect the moment of silence to be called for, or anything like that.

And what did Chris Henry do for the NFL except for constantly giving them a black eye for all of his off-field behavior?
