Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha -- the first Vietnam combat veteran elected to Congress -- died this afternoon, following complications from recent gallbladder surgery.

Murtha, 77, served as chairman of the House panel that oversaw defense spending and was a longtime congressional advocate for the military. The Democrat generated national attention in 2005 when he called for the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.

Murtha also was a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and known as a powerhouse dealmaker who directed millions in federal projects to his western Pennsylvania congressional district.

He was elected in February 1974 and was the longest serving member of the House from Pennsylvania.
